Make sure you get ABS too.

This was the plan... get like a 2000-2002 Civic for a practice car

Seriously, glad she's ok! I hope she calms down and agrees to take a defensive driving course or get more instruction so she can become a safer driver.

Did she crash in front of your house? j/k yeah, asian, good call

Yes ABS is pretty good as it lets you steer better if you are sliding on ice. It also makes you realize faster if you are sliding as soon as you apply the brakes. (the sound it makes when it engages, and the "force feedback" on the pedal)

Either way she needs some driving lessons as it sounds like she just got off easy through the drive test without enough experience.

I FUCKING KNEW IT!

Can someone explain who asian women are predisposed of not being able to drive? Maybe she just shouldn't drive, especially if she's danger to other people on the road.

Well... she was in a V6 and those things do have a little bit of power.

A civic will have a lot less power and will be some what safer. Will be harder for her to get herself in trouble, especially from over acceleration.

I would not be surprised to find out that she went to hit the brakes and instead hit the pedal and accelerated into the tree.

how the hell? she flipped an accord? It's not huge, but it's wide enough so that unless she was trying to take a 90 degree turn at 90mph she should be fine... She just a crappy driver? get her a volvo with a rev limiter at 3.5k or something

She's an Asian woman, ANYTHING is possible.

But yeah, you'd be an idiot to let her get a nice car... she sounds like an idiot herself for wanting one.

A new driver at 30? what?

Of course there's an other side of story. After his urging, I agreed to post here.

First, thanks for reading here and all your wise advise/ suggestions.

And then, there's macho corny jokes.... Spook's laughing his balls off while I rolled eyes, uh huh. Although that tank comment.... hmmm.... (need war paint to go with that) and I have used the cammi paint before.

I may be a novice driver but that doesn't mean I lack common sense. I may have a "lead foot" but not an overly aggressive maniac on wheels. And no, I don't drink and drive. Period.

Actually I am a calm person- in and out of car. When I was in a car (upside down) I was in shock but as soon I smell some kind of fume and see smokes billowing inside, I knew I have to get out of the car ASAP. So I unbuckled the belt, opened the door and crawled out. Then I checked myself--- nope, no squirting blood, no broken bones, and my spine intact. Yep (looking up) someone is watching over me. Yes, I am calm even days after that but my hubby... not so much.

Achy and sore, I went to see the totaled car (wow) and couple car dealership. In the beginning I just want a car-nothing in mind. First car I tested out, eh. Then my loving hubby took me to Honda dealership. At there I saw a used car. Silver Civic. '06 Eh. Another car to test drive, I thought. When I got in and my hands on a steering wheel. Not bad. I liked a digital speedometer and started to drive around. Fits me just like a winter glove, perrrfect.
Spook was considering this then after a few more researching via internet, he wants to reconsider the Civic and get a cheaper car. Man, it's like showing you a Kobe Rib eye steak and bring out a Big Mac.
Have anyone ever found something you never thought of wanting, then *bam* you saw it and in your deepest gut, you have to have it. Instinct or Impulse....

Yea and then your common sense kicks in and says that you just crashed a car cus you were speeding and are inexperienced and shouldn't have a car that nice while still learning to drive. I don't see another side to the story.

So what is your mentality for not slowing down for turns? I think that is the most important perspective.

Are we sure this is really spookswife??

What if spook just created this alter ego so he could kill her down the road???

I think I've been on ATOT too much because everything is starting to reference back to another thread....

Being a novice means you lack experience. You wouldn't give a 16 year old kid with their learners permit a ferrari... why should you get anything more than a beater.

Have you ever eaten a kobe rib eye, puked it up a few seconds later then ordered another kobe rib eye? no.

you just puked up a car.. explain why you should get anything more than a big mac?

as far as i see.. you haven't explained "your side" other than ' i want a fancy car'

Spookswife... rollover crashes account for only 2% of all crashes nationally. 2%! 1 out of every 50 crashes!!!!

And you just had one.

Your main focus as this point should be safety, safety, safety. Buy the safest car you can get and definitely look at getting a car that is 'under powered' so that led foot doesn't get you in trouble.

Next look into some driving schools and get some lessons from a professional.

Finally... perspective...
I am 40 and have had only one crash (got hit) in my entire life. Beyond that I have not had ONE accident of ANY kind. No parking lot crashes. No running into yellow poles. No dents or dings of any kind either.

If you have only been driving for a few months and have lots of close calls and added some dents and scratches then you ARE doing something wrong.

You don't lack common sense, but you went fast enough to roll an Accord? These two statements do not go together. An animal in the road is a poor excuse, that's a LOT of speed to roll an Accord. Calm doesn't mean common sense either.

Everyone has been there, wanting something that they really shouldn't have. The question is whether you do the smart thing, or let your emotions run you. Yeah, the older car won't be as fun, it's not the nice toy you found... but after what happened with the prior vehicle, justifying the expense of the newer car is a lot harder.

Take a defensive driving course. Just because your car CAN go that fast through a corner doesn't mean you should, and now you've seen exactly why not. And, just because you've learned something about corners, there's something else out there waiting to get you. Maybe next time it'll be that highway off-ramp with black ice at the top (that one got me), who knows. Point is, take a defensive driving course, get some experience on a less valuable beater. You can find another 2006 Civic after you've taken some time with an older car, Civics aren't exactly few in number.

You sound like a spoiled teenager justifying a ridiculous purchase. Were you on this show recently?

I'm also not sure "your side" of the story did you much justice. Seems like Spook has been fairly faithful in his explanation and presented your side quite accurately, if not in a more favorable light.

Thanks MotF (and other kind peeps) for all your inputs and sharing your experiences.
My hubby is great at compromising with me (and convincing) so I am not too stubborn with him. Much. To those, please erase an image of a spoiled brat with pouty mouth. It's just that I am enchanted with all the bells and whistles of Civic. Visualize your upcoming computer upgrades. Doesn't it make you drool?

Yes, and yes million times-- I learned my big mistake, will never forget that lesson. Slowing down, I can do that.

PS- I like that description of puking up the car.

BTW, He's making me reconsider.... so any one of you have a car I can have? Perhaps a Civic?
