Thanks everybody for the replies. I needed to give her some other perspective. Being too close to me can make things very emotionally heated. She has come around, and understands that I have given her a fair deal to get the car she would like. Now to tell her that each new scratch on the beater means -3months to getting that car...

how does even a newbie driver not feel they are going too fast around a bend? Accords don't have recaro seats right? If you can feel yourself moving/shifting in your seat, use the brakes! Practice on highway on/off-ramps that bend... at midnight with nobody else around. And definitely a used car. I made the mistake of getting a new car at 17 and didn't realize how easy it is to hit someone tailgating. I should've definitely learned my lessons with a beater first.

Sure it does. However, our computer upgrades don't affect others on the road; their lives or their families. There's a considerable difference and you need to realize this before your foot touches a gas pedal.

Spookswife, Jesus Christ, you just rolled a car, by far the most serious kind of single-car accident. You don't get a nice new car, period. You can't drive properly yet. Most people go their whole lives without rolling a car, you just did it almost instantly.

You're already at a disadvantage being a woman (Preemptive reply to the "WAHHHHH SEXIST" replies that will crop up: I work as an auto insurance adjuster and when I say this in no uncertain terms, it comes from a place of knowledge: Women are far worse drivers than men) and your casual "yeah I have a leadfoot" statement belies just how clueless you currently are behind the wheel. Learn how to drive, THEN you get a nice car.

You shouldn't be driving fast enough on the public roads to notice that anyways.

First, thanks for reading here and all your wise advise/ suggestions.

And then, there's macho corny jokes.... Spook's laughing his balls off while I rolled eyes, uh huh. Although that tank comment.... hmmm.... (need war paint to go with that) and I have used the cammi paint before.

I may be a novice driver but that doesn't mean I lack common sense. I may have a "lead foot" but not an overly aggressive maniac on wheels. And no, I don't drink and drive. Period.

Actually I am a calm person- in and out of car. When I was in a car (upside down) I was in shock but as soon I smell some kind of fume and see smokes billowing inside, I knew I have to get out of the car ASAP. So I unbuckled the belt, opened the door and crawled out. Then I checked myself--- nope, no squirting blood, no broken bones, and my spine intact. Yep (looking up) someone is watching over me. Yes, I am calm even days after that but my hubby... not so much.

Achy and sore, I went to see the totaled car (wow) and couple car dealership. In the beginning I just want a car-nothing in mind. First car I tested out, eh. Then my loving hubby took me to Honda dealership. At there I saw a used car. Silver Civic. '06 Eh. Another car to test drive, I thought. When I got in and my hands on a steering wheel. Not bad. I liked a digital speedometer and started to drive around. Fits me just like a winter glove, perrrfect.
Spook was considering this then after a few more researching via internet, he wants to reconsider the Civic and get a cheaper car. Man, it's like showing you a Kobe Rib eye steak and bring out a Big Mac.
Have anyone ever found something you never thought of wanting, then *bam* you saw it and in your deepest gut, you have to have it. Instinct or Impulse....

Gotta be the first time I've ever heard any Honda compared to a Kobe Rib Eye steak... MAYBE a cheap cut like flank steak...

I stand by my earlier recommendation that you be required to take a proper driving class before you get another car. While you "know how to drive," you need to learn how to drive properly.

You lost control of your car in a corner...that does NOT imply common sense...

Why do women pay lower insurance rates then? Is it because of the cost rather than the frequency of accidents? My gut feeling is that women get into more accidents, but men get into more expensive (i.e. higher speed) accidents. Would you say that's true or is there something else at work here?

Buy her the new car, then get a roll cage and 5-point harnesses installed

this. details are missing on why she lost her license previously.

OP probably meant "She's 30 and just got her license, back then in the middle of May," which would explain why she's still not used to driving and controlling her speed.

yeh, he clarified. the wording was confusing.

sounds like she needs more practice : /

I understood it *shrug*

The point is that getting your licence should mean you are capable of driving safely on the road. Or is it easy to get your licence in the States?

Men speed more, and batting our eyelashes while smiling bashfully is less likely to get us out of a ticket when we're caught. Ticket = insurance hike.

I suspect that women cause accidents that are technically other peoples faults, but in reality it's due to their erratic driving. Right or wrong, you assume a minimal competence level from other people, so when they pull into a WaWa parking lot and hit the brakes for no reason, you rear end them :^/

In addition to that, men drive much more than women, so even if skill were exactly equal, men would have more accidents.

how incredibly witty

I chuckled. Seriously though, my mom is probably the best driver in my family - better than my dad in terms of caution and watching the road. It's all about experience - I made some stupid driving mistakes when I first started, too. After 2 years I'm still not entirely comfortable on the highway, although I do have a good feel for "my" car.

After I read she was asian, I proceeded to the reply box.

There is no hope for this one. Some people can drive cars well enough to keep a license, and some can't. Your wife is of the latter group. Tell her you're getting an older car and you'll replace it with a newer one after 1 year of good behavior. If she doesn't like it, then too bad.

I was in the same boat a few years ago. My wife was 25 and had never driven a car before. We decided (after much argument) that she was going to learn to drive. I signed her up for some classes and gave her a '99 Pontiac Grand Prix with 90k miles. Best decision ever.

It drives like a tank and takes a beating. A few years later, she's now an experienced driver and we feel completely confident in getting a newer, better condition car.
