Glad she's agreed to going with a "lesser" vehicle.

A few points:

It's been alluded to, but just to be clear, driving is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. If you can't do it properly and responsibly, you shouldn't be on the road. Bus pass/ridesharing are good options.

Defensive driving classes are absolutely the best thing for new drivers. IMO, they should be mandatory for getting your license. I took Young Drivers back when I was 16, and I still use the lessons in my everyday driving. I check my mirrors frequently, maintain space around my vehicle and always look far ahead. I notice parked cars well in advance, and I am already anticipating potential problems before many other drivers see them. As a result, I have had only a couple of close calls back when I first started out, and none since (I'm now 26). I've never been in a collision *knock wood*.

It is psychologically more difficult for older drivers to learn to drive if they haven't been behind the wheel ever (in this case, I mean late 20s +). This is because neural pathways for learning are already becoming set - similar to how it is much easier to learn a new language as a child, compared to as an adult.

I have seen this frequently in the city where I grew up - lots of Asian people who immigrated to Canada as adults. They never needed to drive back in China and Hong Kong, but because of our less developed transportation system here, driving is unfortunately necessary. Thus they have to learn to drive as adults, and it is obvious that they struggle to become competent (although they are usually overly cautious, as opposed to being reckless). This is not a racial statement - I have seen it in other ethnic groups who immigrated here; it is just that the majority of our immigrants are from China and Hong Kong.

It's not impossible to learn to drive as an adult; it merely takes more practice and patience. Proper driving instruction is strongly recommended.

After looking carefully, I believe I see a couple of major problems.

First, in these pics:

http://img3.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0093xzx.jpg

The tires are clearly in the air. They are designed to work much better when in contact with the road.
Turn car over and try again.

Next, in this pic:

your wife appears to be an Asian female. They were never intended to drive automobiles...and it's not in their genes to learn how to properly do so.

EVERYONE knows this.

The most important thing is that she's ok. Iron & rubber can be replaced. That's why we pay insurance premiums. Family members are not so easily replaced...even when we'd like to...

She has done some classes, and has her license. I'm hoping she is having one of those lightbulb moments crashing the car and all. But even out on her test drives with a couple of cars, I wasn't feeling any change in her attitude, still taking curves to fast, and not controlling her speed.

As far as paying for it, we share our finances, so its not me, and its not her... its our decision. Perhaps that makes it more difficult right about now.

If she hasn't learned her lesson, then buy her a bus pass. She obviously is not mature enough to be driving a car if she drives like that. She's lucky that she only got brusied up a little. You need to take the kid gloves off and show your wife what can happen when driving like she does. Sit her ass down and make her look at the gruesome stuff online of car wrecks. Find news stories of people killing whole families because they couldn't take the time to slow down.
And if you don't have kids with her now, absolutely make sure you don't have kids with her until she can show some improvement in her maturity levels.

Oh, and say hello to a rate increase on your insurance.

Whats funny about that is that she works in the Main OR at the hospital, She see's first hand what accidents can do to people... She's seen, and works with the gruesome stuff. So, nothing on TV or the internet will shock her into doing better.

Ehh hospital workers are an odd breed. when I used to work at a hospital in college, I saw several Respiratory Techs chain smoking outside. These are people who REGULARLY deal with other chain smokers and are well aware of what's going to happen to their future and they still choose to smoke.

to spooks wife. while i can understand wanting to get a new car, you should seriously consider getting an older one until you've had a year or two of driving under your belt. the 06 civic will still be there (probably not that same car) or maybe down the raod you'll find a car a 1000 times better for you. (a nice hummer:laugh give it some time and be patient. your husband is only thinking of your best interest (and your best financial interestes as well)

If she wants a new car get her a Kia Rio and attach boat fenders all the way around. I recommend the red ones for added visibility that might give any pedestrians/wildlife/trees in the vicinity extra time to get out of the way.

My health professor was a combat medic in Korea. She also worked in the Emergency center at Tallahassee Memorial. She would train students and require that they watched at least one person die in the ER so they could find out if they could really handle it.

Still, she got in a car accident where she was messed up pretty bad and her best friend riding with her was killed.

She couldn't set foot in a hospital again after that. She literally starts shaking when she goes inside one.

I want to get a less expensive car for now to practice(1yr or so), and if she does well, get the car she wants later.
WTF. You don't buy a car to practice. This isn't a damn dirt track, try out the new BMX and once you crash it a few times then we'll get you a better one.

But even out on her test drives with a couple of cars, I wasn't feeling any change in her attitude, still taking curves to fast, and not controlling her speed.
I'm glad she's ok, honestly, but get her the hell off the road. For real.

If I was in your situation, I would buy her a new or fairly recent car with great crash test ratings. Why? Safety reason. Older cars are deathtrap and safety standards have improved greatly the past couple of years. Just watch some Youtube clips of new car/ old car crash test comparisons.

Safety and health > money

I would get my 16/17 year olds something used with reliability, little power, and good crash ratings. Civics it is. They can move up once they have a few years experience.

If she's still taking turns too quickly, don't buy her anything.

Learn to drive lady. Bad drivers make good drivers insane, and then roll their cars into oncoming traffic.

After looking at the photos, I think you should buy her a driving wheel and limit her to driving the Suzuki Cappuccino in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
