It's very depressing.
I thought it was very good until the ending.
The ending sucked and made me very angry.

Very good movie. More than worth seeing in the theater IMO (much less a rental). I felt the storyline could have been improved just a little, but the acting was top-notch. Sean Penn won Best Actor, and Tim Robbins Best Supporting Actor. It's a dark, gritty drama that maintains a very "real life" edge.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it 85%

The movie was great up until the last scene. It wasn't horrible, but I just didn't care for it.

I don't get these Law and Order references. The movie was nothing like a Law and Order episode. You missed out if you think so. The movie was a morality play, demonstrating how evil leads to more evil (which leads to yet more evil), and the impact of all that evil on the lives of those involved.
As I mentioned earlier, there are some legitimate gripes about the story (which I will not spoil), but the movie itself is drama acting, production, and direction at its finest.

Some people need to go back to watching their Con Air-esque action flicks methinks... :roll:

It's Law and Order in the sense that at one point the story just follows the cops from one lead to another. I got the same feeling when I watched it, but I still enjoyed it very much.

no i just meant part of it was like a law and order eps. the rest is just actors getting to look sad, depressed and angry. very "academy" friendly performance type scenes. it just gets dreary and pointless. and the morality play bit just gets old fast. its like your being beaten over the head with it when u got the point long ago. mainly, the plot is rather pointless.

The Law & Order comparison is pretty close to the truth. I just finished watching it and thought it was a good movie. Think of it as the best L&O episode that got good reviews as a movie because of the Penn, Robbins, Bacon, Fishburne, Hunter, etc.

Definately worth a rental. I do advise against purchase because I don't see it as having much of a replay value.

And yes, I 'got it'.
