MythBusters
Airplane on a Conveyor Belt
TV-PG Wednesday January 30th 9:00 p.m. est.

In this three-myth blockbuster the team takes a crash-course in remote controlled airplane flying, bug-out by testing the "cockroach survival" theory, then return to fraternity pranks with exploding cans of shaving cream.

for those concerned that this story has been cancelled, don't worry, planes on a conveyer belt has been filmed, is spectacular, and will be part of what us Mythbusters refer to as 'episode 97'. Currently that is due to air on January 30th.

Dan Tapster, executive producer of MythBusters.

Of course the plane would take off, but these guys might screw it up, have to watch and see.........

I doubt it, there's always that one guy out there that swears on the bible that a black car is white. The same will be true here, MythBusters could miss one tiny thing that wouldnt change sh1t and you'll never hear the end of it or hell, people will start making up sh1t. The weather wasnt right, the engines weren't running at max etc. .. .

To be fair, they do get LOTS of stuff wrong. If they didn't try to pass themselves off as doing their experiments even pseudo-scientifically, they'd get a lot less flak about it.

specially when its in a scaled-down controlled scenario, where that treadmill is not going to get enough speed to prevent the jet from rolling forward. but actually, now that I think about it, the airplane should just end up rolling off the front of the treadmill, only way to prevent that is to construct a treadmill the size of a typical runway distance (for whatever scale the experiment will be conducted at). And controlling the speed of the conveyor belt, if not done automatically, will probably result in some error on at least 1 attempt.

that is what i mean, they have to know/figure out that the length of the treadmill has to be => the normal take off distance of the airplane they are using

if the airplane needs 200 ft of runway to take off normally, then they need a 210 ft treadmill

I still say that the plane is going to crash! The Mythbusters are pros at making almost anything crash when they test it

I'm curious to see how they define the problem.

Do the wheel bearings have friction?
Do the wheels have mass, and thus rotational inertia?
Is the speed of the wheels a function of the rotational speed of the engines, or of the velocity of the body of the airplane?

Many things can contribute to this.

Or explode. Their Rocket Car v2.0 made for an impressive bomb, but not a good rocket. That was kind of disappointing. They even got Scottie back for that one, complete with short shorts.

if the treadmill is spinning then shouldn't they only need enough belt to cover the wheels? i want to see the plane take off then. haha
