I'm getting an Athlon 64 3200+ 754 socket, and I was wondering what ram I should get, I bought the nForce3 K8T Neo Platinum mobo from MSI, so what should I get? I'm looking at getting a gig for gaming.

Hey all, been browsing through here for a few days now, in the hopes of making a smart choice for my next PC. Been very informative so far, gj people. :thumbsup:

Now, currently I've decided on an AMD64 3000+, and I plan to do some heavy o/c'ing. Would the Corsair Value Select series fair well?

no. the corsair xms series will though. kingston hyperx and ocz performance are supposed to be good too, but i havent used anything but corsair xms because ive always had good results with them. that doesnt mean the other brands are bad, i just cant rate them seeing as how ive never used em myself.

Hmm... ok. Around my area (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), I generally have two preferred stores: Canada Computers and Sunny Computers.

From Canada Computers, I'm guessing the best pick is to go with the TWINX1024-3200 2X512MB PC-3200 DDR400.

From Sunny Computers, how does the Geil 1GB-Kit 2X512 DDR400 PC-3200 CL2.5 DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY KIT sound? Or would it be better to go two sticks of OCZ Premier 512MB?

After doing a search, I'm getting mixed results here. Some say that it's best to stick with cheaper PC3500 (or more) RAM, while others say to get the more expensive stuff. Anyway, so far I haven't had any luck with finding the Ballistix sticks, but will continue to look. If you guys think it's really worth it, should I just maybe order them online? Thing is, I really prefer to just drop by a store and pick them up myself, as with all my parts (with the exception of the 6800GT). But if it really makes or breaks the difference, then I guess I'll give it a shot.

Edit: Hmm, come to think of it, how does two of OCZ's PC3500 DDR433 512MB Premier Series sound?

Ok, I think my mind's been made up, and no, I won't be going with the "Big Boys" as suggested, but rather, with KingMax.

I've read commentaries regarding their products, and most people seem to love them. Now the big question is, for o/c'ing purposes, which would be the best to go for? The PC3500, 3700, or 4000's?

How about ... buy PC3200 cheap value RAM for like $200 Canadian (2x512) and put the extra $200 you would have spent on PC4000 O/C memory into a faster proc like the 3400 or 3500

that way you're running stock, don't need extra cooling, will have a fast comp and won't void the warranties of the memory or CPU ?

Yeah, I may actually consider that idea, however...

3000+ = $239
Zalman7000 = $62
PC4000 RAM = $298
Total = $599

3400+ = $409
PC3200 RAM = $232
Total = $641

Although the extra $42-or-so would get me the ideal stock, faster 3400+, do you think that difference alone would be worth it? Is the 3400+ that much faster than an o/c'ed 3000+?

I think it'd be worth $50 to run more quiet, have more stability and peace of mind but that's just me.

Okay, I found another place with better prices, which are as follows:

3000+ and
Zalman and
PC4000 total
$595

... whereas, the

3400+ and
PC3200 total
$617

... thus, difference of $22 now, not bad, not bad at all.

Now for the kicker: The RAM is made by Hynix. I can also get a pair of Samsungs for the same price at that particular store. Should I stick with the Hynix'es?

Also, just for fun... with these "cheap" PC3200 modules and the 3400+'s stock cooling, would I be able - with any luck - to obtain any overclocks whatsoever?

you can get a small over clock with stock/low end parts.

what most people do is get a slower a64(say a 3000+) and overclock it to a 3400+ while spending money on ram thats been given good reviews and shown decent overclocks.

check out the ram article anandtech just did, if i remember right the pc3500 from ocz was one of the highest overclockers, and shikira(sp?) ram seemed to be pretty good to for overclock. either way, read the ram article.

Yup, read the article "fully" just now, and am just stuck inbetween the two choices: whether it would be wiser to get a 3000+ and o/c it, or to get the 3400+ and let it run stock for the meantime (should be plenty for speed, anyway).

Just wondering now... as "most" people get 3000+s and o/c, is there any reason for this, besides the odd $20 saving? O/c'ing aside, on A64 chips, would having "quality name-branded" RAM provide a noticeable speed difference in everyday usage (including gaming)? I'm just weary of having to spend much more on OCZ this, or Crucial that, when plain-jane's can run just as well as those.
