Phuck .... I have a DFI lanparty, A64 3200+, and a Zalman 7000AlCu. I used artic silver 5. Temp is getting higher than 65C.

Maybe I have to much Artic Silver on it? The stuff I got was thick, like rubber cement. Thicker than plastic model glue. I droped 3 pinhead size blobs and spread and cut excess off with cc.

whoa! 65C?! Load temps shouldnt go higher than 50C if its not OCed.. Take off the HSF and clean it, you probably have too much thermal paste on it. Go to the arctic silver webpage, they have pictures and instructions on how much thermal paste you should put on your cpu and what it should look like. btw, what are you using to read the temps?

Arg... btw I am using 4 Smart Case fan II, sounds like im on the tarmac.

Who told you die temp is 90c ?? Old Athlon xp was 90c and the Athlon mobile were 100c but I never seen a link where the A64 max die temp was 90c,do you have a link to the 90c max die temp you claim?

I keep getting low 60s in bios.

Resat CPU. Artic Silver 5 is like axel grease. I put 1.5 rice grains worth on the chip. BIOS still says 60C.

Arctic Silver application instructions

YES, you must clean the HSF and the cpu's heatspreader. Clean it with high purity isopropyl alcohol and use a clean lint-free cloth to wipe everything before you reapply the paste. Read the instructions for more details.

Also, see what version BIOS you have. See on the manufacturer's website to see if your BIOS version reads the die temp incorrectly.

make sure you don't have some sort of temperature cables on the die or some other stuff that would prevent proper contact between the heatsink and the cpu die. I had my temps go over 65 when the HSF wasn't sitting properly on the CPU. You should get temps 30-57 MAX

well this Zalman pos backplate I am not particulary impressed with. Why they used a peice of pop-metal and cr@pily (its a word now) slapped a peice of cardboard on it instead of a peice of formed plastic is beyond me. I cut the cardboard to allow proper leveling of the backplate. Thought this was going to be an easy set up, guess I'll be fighting the AS5 sludge tomarrow.

I saw this. Is this correct?

Yeah that is high. I have a Chieftec Dragon case with an A64 3200+ Clawhammer @2.2ghz with the STOCK cooler with paste scraped off and AS5 on it.. 3 80mm vantecs in case. I run folding@home on it 24/7 100% CPU load and temps never go over 53c

You have either way to much AS5 on or bios is reading wrong or very bad airflow. P.S. i also live in FL and all summer long it never got over 53c overclocked 100% load 24/7

I drop just over a grain of rice dead center on the 64's then lock down and never have any problems. Be sure to clean both the cpu and the HS real well.

I also rub a drop of AS5 onto the HS then wipe it down so it leaves a haze before i apply it to the cpu. this ensures a VERY thin full even coat.

Too much AS5 is almost as bad as having none.

Also hate to but i MUST say it just in case!! Are your case fans pointing the right direction?? front suck air in rear blow out. Sounds dumb but people do it backwards all the time.

Yes the case fans are in the right direction, thanks for that remark. grrr
So you hazed the sink and just let compression spread the silver on the CPU?

Yes hazed the sink and compression does the job perfect. No need to spread it out just need the right amount.

stop worrying about temperature. If its stable in prime95 and your not getting random crashes than there is no need to worry about temperature

Download Motherboard Monitor 5 and see what temp it read the cpu at.. Also, if you have Sandra, use that to read your temps too to see if its consistent with what your BIOS reads.
