Is the NEC 1860NX a good bet for a gaming monitor?

Everybody seems to say that a sub 20ms response time is necessary for adequate TFT gaming. But all the PC retailers (Alienware, Mesh etc) seem to include this model as standard in their 'Gamer Pro' packages.

Is is noticable?

The 1860NX generally gets excellent reviews

I would say that it is a safe bet if Alienware and others are including it with their systems.

I`m using a Samsung 191T for gaming which has a response time of 25ms which is very good for a 19".I don`t really notice ghosting in gaming ,however if I look for it on very fast parts I can see some slight ghosting but not enough to bother me.As far as I know there`s still no 16ms response time LCDs in 18" and 19" sizes just yet ,but these will become available down the road.

17" LCDs with 16ms like NEC 1760NX,Hitachi CML174 etc are probably the best you can get at the moment for fast gaming.

It really is down to the type of games you play and how much your eyes notice the ghosting, also using DVI with V-Sync on will help reduce the ghosting so it`s wise to buy a monitor that has DVI connection as well, also using DVI gives the best image quality( if your monitor and video card both support DVI).

I use a NEC 1715, which is a pretty no frills 16ms LCD with only an analogue connection.

I also have a samsung 191T in another room that I took down to do a AB test.

While 25ms is not bad at all. 16ms really does blow it away if you play FPS games, other than that, a 25ms LCD shouldn't give you any problems at all, and having a 19 instead of a 17 is better, since they both run native at 1280X1024.

Ok, I've spent the last day scouring the internet for reviews and it seems that the 1860nx is a cracking bit of kit. The general consensus is that no discernible ghosting is noticed.

I''ve got a 9800pro so I can hook it up via DVi and apparently NEC's proprietary Rapid Response technology is really pretty nifty.

What the hey, it's only money. Thanks for your tips guys

I have a NEC/Mitsubishi LCD1860NX-BK and I love it. I have no problems with games. My only critique would be that I wish it was a little brighter. I am running an ATI 9500 PRO via DVI, and play mostly desertcombat. Great monitor.

I have to say I'm totally happy with it. The first time I plugged in the Dvi cable and got the res to 1280x1024 the image quality nearly blinded me and a smile quickly appeared on my face.

I loaded up the new Call Of Duty demo and it looks fantastic, I agree with Chucko about the brightness, you do have to whack up the contrast during the darker games but I also tried Chrome and Homeworld 2 as well the 9800pro 'Gargoyle' demo and I really have absolutely no complaints, blacks are nice and deep and colurs are rich. Desktop work is staggeringly clear and bright and the screen is just enormous.

I did a compare and contrast side by side with my old CRT and there's no comparison, it takes up less space and makes people go 'woooooo, that's nice'

Roll on Max Payne 2 next week
