NEC 19" monitor squealing

got a NEC MultiSync FE 950, plugged into a GF2 ultra.

at 1152*864 @ 85hz it's started to regularly make a high pitched buzzing noise (quiet but V noticeable) , especially when there's a patch of white in the middle of the screen. the noise goes away if i turn the contrast or brightness right down -- or don't have a white box in the screen.
if i drag notepad around on the screen i can actually notice the buzzing changing.

i don't image there's a quick fix for this apart from maybe changing resolutions/refresh's (which i don't want to do)

the monitor is about 5 years old (cost £350 :s). well out of warranty.

anyone had any similar experiences?

the high voltage regulator is going out. be carefull with that one, about 1 in 5000 just catch on fire after a while when they do that. I'd go ahead and buy a replacement.

thanx. is this something NEC can repair? (i know the answer is "ask them" but wondered if anyones knows if this is a common problem) (and i'm sure they'd do it for free.....not)

also....is there anything which will relieve the problem...lower refresh rates....different brightnesses on screen....lower res...etc?

If you tap "gently" on the sides and the sound changes, it might be the 'flyback' transformer. I can't remember exactly what they do, but it has to so with horizontal or vertical signal syc. since you can use them to make descramblers. These can go bad after a few years and cause a distinctive squeal.
Any tv repair place should be able to replace the transformer if a replacement is on the market, or get one used. They prob. have equipment to check it also. Mine has been carrying on for about a year now and I am finally getting a new mon. but I can tap mine and make it go away for a while. I haven't heard a bad power supply noise and I haven't heard yours so lobadobadingdong may be right.
Either way a decent shop ought to be able to tell you what's wrong for much less than a new one. Good Luck
