Need a LCD monitor

I want something that is less than $300 or just slightly over it. The less the better.

My main priorities are something that is great for text but also decent for gaming. I used to game a lot, but now much less. So something that reading text is good on is what I'm looking for.

There is the ViewSonic VX922 19' which is supposed to be a gamer's LCD and is in my price range but is it good for text? How is the Hyundai L90D+?

If there are others I would appreciate it.

can't go wrong with 922.

if you want to save a little bit of money, 920 or the L90D+ are good too.

Resolution does not matter, since I don't care if its a widescreen or not. 1280x1024, 1600x1200, or 1680x1050 all work.

DO NOT buy a 2005FPW. I know a lot of ppl will tell you that but the 2005 and 2405 are pieces of sh!ts. I have a 2405 and I've seen teh 2005 too many times. Once you own a QUALITY panel, you will laugh at everyone jumping in on these Dell deals. All they're good for is ebay.

19" is good. If you want a good 19", I suggest the Viewsonic VP930b or the Samsung 193P. Do not compromise for an L90 or Samsung 930B or a VX922. L90 = 930B and if you compare this to Viewsonic's VP930b (I have the VP191b which is almost the same) your eyes will be in pain looking at those crappy 6-bit panels. Viewsonic's VP930b is 8ms gray to gray and 20ms black to white. If you game, which I do, it's definitely good. Ghosting? Only if you really realyl really really try to find it. It's virtually nonexistent.

20" Is good too, but I don't know what panels are good. 2001FP? VP201b? Not sure..

I like Dell LCDs, and a lot of ATers have them. I have 3 Dells and plan to pickup a 2405 later this year. I have a Sony LCD and my Dell is definitely better.

Well, when a lot of people buy Dells and if 5%-10% complain, that's a lot of people. Surely there is no product that doesn't have complaints, but to say something inflammatory based on what is hearsay, is pure horsesh*t.

The 2005FPW, or the 2007FPW now since it's the newer model, is a bit on the expensive side and I don't want to spend more than $300 on a monitor. The Viewsonic VP930b is more than $130 expensive than the BenQ FP92G+ or the older model I think the FP91G+.

I have read around that the FP91G+ is a pretty good monitor all around and is decent at gaming. I am leaning towards it unless convinced otherwise.

I don't think there will be a huge different between the two except for maybe better adjustability for the newer model. That and the FP91G+ is more proven. Right?

Yea I know the VP930b is a very expensive 19" monitor, but you will realize it is definitely worth it.

I don't know if anyone remembers when the Samsung 930B came out. 8ms ISO rating meaning they do 8ms BLACK to WHITE and people were like WOWZ. I bought one. It hurt my eyes. I came from a VERY HIGH quality 17" CRT (Samsung 700NF) and the Samsung 19" 930B hurt my eyes. Crazy. I tried to get used to it and I did. I returned it after 3 weeks.

Bought another one in a month just to give it a chance because it was so cheap. Still sucked. This monitor is EXACTLY the same as the L90 btw. Then I got the guts to pull the trigger on a Viewsonic VP191b (older generation of the VP930b.. only difference I think is 800:1 contrast ratio vs 1000:1), and wow. I was amazed. Colors were BEAUTIFUL. I don't see how anyone can live with that POS the Samsung 930B. I did a comprehensive review too.

I went to Asia and they were selling both the Samsung 940B 930B and then the 193P next to each other. The 193P stood out so well with its sharp clear and easy viewing images and I knew I made the right choice. Viewsonic's VP191b/VP930b competes directly with the 193P and image quality is on par except Samsung is EXPENSIVE. Viewsonic's cheaper 8ms panels competes with Samsung's 930B and damn....

I know you want to game, and I'm telling you that you should get an 8ms panel but make sure it's 8bit. Like all those "FAST@$$" panels with crappy color? Wow. NO WAY. I game and you can't see CRAP in the dark because of those 6-bit panels (Samsung 930B, L90, etc). Even with an 8-bit panel today, looking at dark stuff is still hard compared to my CRT. 800:1 contrast ratio helps, but I bet the VP930b would do an even better job.

Once you get a good LCD panel, it's a long term investment. You'll never look back and regret it nor will you think about it again. You'll know you have a panel that kicks a lot of panels asses for the next 5 years at least. One day... when mainstream LCDs can beat my VP191b... then maybe I'll upgrade.

BenQ FP93GX

This monitor has a 2ms, which should help in games. It is relatively new. The price is decent.

The FP93G has a 6ms but is slightly cheaper.

I'll look around some more ...

I don't think you should factor in a 2ms and 6ms response time into your buying decision since anything less than 16ms should be sufficient. My 12ms is perfect, and I've never noticed ghosting. To be safe or for the extra sensitive, 8ms should be perfect. Also, I'm not sure how good BenQ panels are. When I got my LG, I was about to get a BenQ when I noticed that the local refurb/outlet store had about 10 BenQ models for sale with about maybe 1 or 2 other (Sony, LG, etc.) models. Are they prone to breaking? I don't know since I have heard good things.

You only gave it 3 weeks? It took me 3 months to get used to my LCD going from a crappy, low contrast (I set it that way) 15" CRT to a 17" superbright LCD. My eyes were still hurting after the first month and a half. The first issue was the text size since I use to run at a higher resolution, then it was the brightness. About 10 months later, everything is now fine and my eyes feel WAY better at the same blinding settings than on my old crappy CRT. Anyways, don't know if I'm so use to taking ****** that I put up with anything or not, but I don't think you should be too worried about getting rid of the eye strain quickly.

Well clearly the Samsung 930B is not really good. Sure it's bright, but the colors are just washed out. Brightness is not the only thing you look for.

I mean using my VP191b my eyes never got sore unless I was there the whole day. The Samsung 930B I get sore in like an hour. Maybe it's because I had a pretty good CRT begin with. Color reproduction with TN panels is just terrible. If you get an all-around panel, I say it will be a lot better.

Too many people emphasize on GAMING and yes I am a gamer. You don't need those 3ms panels to experience gaming. When you're down to minimal to zero ghosting on say my panel (8ms g to g, 20ms b to w), you're not looking for ghosting when you're playing anyways. Plus, when you go down to a 3ms panel, you're sacrificing detail, color reproduction, ability to see in dark corners (CRITICAL in many games) for a little less ghosting? Is it worth it? Hell no. Instead I had to turn my monitor to SUPER BRIGHT in CS so I wouldn't get knifed by some newb hiding in CT spawn in de_dust2. That completely ruined how CS looked. With a VP191b, I don't have to do that. It's not the easiest to see in the dark as iwth any LCD, but trust me the colors are a LOT better once you go to an 8-bit panel. I'm guessing the VP930b will be only better with its 1000:1 contrast ratio.

NEC 90GX2 for an all-around good LCD, especially for gaming. It's said to be superior to the VP930b, even in color reproduction (by a user who has used both (farp96)).

Thanks all. I have looked and appreciate all your posts. I don't really think I want to buy a 19' widescreen. The 20' wide loses a bit to 20' regular so I'm imagining the 19' will lose a bit more.

The NEC 90GX2 seems like a sweet monitor but is a bit out of my price range. The Viewsonic VX922 is specifically targeted for gamers so I'm not sure if I qualify for that monitor.

How is the Hyunda L90D+?

The BenQ FP91G+ and FP92G+ are great monitors. I think that the Samsung 940b is superior to them, but also a bit more expensive. But then there is a relatively nicely priced 20.1' widescreen, the ViewSonic VX2025WM. It is a bit out of my price range but it might be worth it.

I am leaning towards the Samsung 940b and the ViewSonic VX2025WM. The Viewsonic widescreen looks so sweet.

This will be mainly for text but also some gaming, but not a lot.

Are these wise decisions? And which of the two mentioned should I choose?

I'd go with the VX922. I have the 924, text is sharp, games are smooth, what more could a guy ask for.
