I've never looked at Hyundai. How is build quality on those? On another front, I have a major hatred of road noise in a car. Are there any brands that I should avoid?

Kia and Hyundai. brands that 5 years ago I would never consider. Have things changed?

same here. thought the hyundai was crap but apparantly they have dramatically increased their quality and are considered just below honda and toyota and above chevy and ford and maybe vw or something. that said doing a search on hyundai reliability brings up reliability ratings and all the brands are all over the map. seems they now go by specific car models than by brand but a reliability rating of the overall brand would still be very nice

I live in CT and get snow on occasion. So RWD is not a real option.

No AWD because I don't want to spend money on it's up front cost and lesser fuel economy for the 10 minutes a year I'd actually want it. (Note that I did not say need it). If the roads are that bad, stay home.

Thanks for the advice on Honda. I'll probably avoid Honda all together. That's the thing about Toyota cars. I'd think that the Camry and the Avalon are both very quiet with the Avalon being quieter. I'm surprised that the Prius is one of the quietest cars on the road after doing some reading. I guess I never noticed how quiet it is.

Anyway, I've been reading up on the Chevy Impala. I'm starting to really like what I am hearing about the ECO model. 35 MPG, $29-$31K. Redone for 2-014 and people are raving aobut it.

I disagree on the Prius. Having been in several of the new ones, including the V, I'd say they are some of the least refined vehicles for the price. Loud, ride is not very comfy (nor is there a terribly sporty trade off), and the seats aren't pleasant imo. If you want a comfy highway cruiser, that is most definitely not it!

The Impala does look promising though.

Fuck the eco model. 3.6 V6 or bust. The previous POS model was damn zippy. The drivetrain was the only good thing about it!

Read about the latest model. I read one site that placed it as the top car in it's class. That's full size in similar price ranges. Beat out the Avalon and a slew of others.

Longest trip we did in the Prius was 5 hours. My wife and I agreed that 5 hours was the limit. The seats are very hard.

As for noise, I didn't think it was bad. There is very little wind resistance so wind noise is almost non existent. And the engine is small and quiet.

But anyway, I need something nice for the purpose of doing long trips.

That was the point I failed to make. The new one looks awesome. The only good thing about the previous model was the 3.6L V6 which is carried over.

The interior with the black interior and dark brown leather trim/seats. Wow. And 35 MPG. Wow.

And yes, I'm sorry. If I go regal, I am going after fuel economy, not power. Just not my thing.

Did you test drive the Avalon hybrid? It's on my short list, but I haven't taken it for a spin yet.

This is the start to my research. Narrowing things down. So I haven't done test drives yet.

I think it is down to a Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon or Chevy Impala. I have to admit though. That Impala ECO for $4K less than the cheapest Avalon Hybrid is pretty damned tempting. The Avalon brings things like heated/cooled seats to the table. Things I could care less about.

I'm leaning towards hybrids even though I could save money by not going hybrid.

If I do this though, I'll probably save $100-$125 per month on gas right off the bat.

Chevy Impala reviews of the V6 are amazing. The one review that talks about the ECO version said it is juddery. A fancy word for has strange shakes. If that's true, it's no longer on my short list.

The Impala eco is barely a hybrid...even less so than the original hybrid drivetrain Honda uses. It's basically a large alternator/motor that provides assist via its drive belt. Like I said, V6 or nothing.

Have you looked at the Altima? seems like highway mileage is important to you, and their new CVT gives you ridiculous highway mileage.

Though, in my mind, Toyota, Lexus(ES) and Buick are probably your best bets for a comfortable car. Those brands aren't very concerned with coolness or handling. I love my Camry for the way it isolates me from the road.

New one has been reviewed well, although its not really a 'large' car. I feel like some better engines are on the horizon for it, but I can't remember. Not sure if the diesel is still planned, that will bring some good mpg numbers to it.

Also, consider a diesel. Passat TDI would put you into the 40mpg range easily, and with that budget you could option it up. Its a pretty big car, probably pretty close inside to a Impala.

Last summer I made the mistake of going and test driving some cars just because I was bored.

Test drove the Camaro, then the Impala. Unfortunately I wasn't all that impressed with either of them.

The biggest problem I have with both vehicles is the layout of the controls & displays. It's like they grabbed them out of a bucket and just threw them to see where they landed.

The Impala felt nice but nothing special.

Yeah, it isn't. I've been in a few of them and they're about the size of a Fusion.

I would take the Avalon Hybrid over all those cars. Toyota's hybrid system is absolutely bombproof.

Did some math.

The Avalon will cost me about $30/month more than my truck. Gas costs drop from $240 to $120 but the monthly loan will go from $416 to $560.

The Chevy Impala Eco should save me $10/month overa truck. So, that means the Avalon Hybrid costs me an extra $40/month vs the impala.

I might go with the Camry SE Hybrid simply because it will save me about $100 per month vs the truck.

Might test drive both and decide.

You will spend less money on maintenance with the Camry or Avalon Hybrid.

So your payment will drop but what about the total loan amount?

And yeah, you do kinda need to test drive both. The Camry may not be as smooth as a Avalon but it's going to be much better than a Prius.

My parents had a 2012 Taurus Limited FWD that I drove regularly for almost a year and while it was a nice car for two people, I really don't see it being all that practical for kids. For as large of a car outside, it does not have good interior space inside. Maybe if the kids are really small it'd be OK, but I can't see larger kids being comfortable on longer trips w/o kicking the back of the parents seats upfront.

Great ride though, nice handling, very quiet, reliable, large trunk, plenty of power, and we were getting 26-28mpg highway with 3 adults (2 heave, 250lbs) at 70-80mph.

Alas no more Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, unless you pick up a used one...

Damn, Lexus ES2350 hybrid ..... wow. Comes in at $39,500. Baiscally a nice Avalon?

Over at a Toyota forum, people generally think the Avalon is a waste of money and that the Camry is the way to go. One said that if the Avalon is a consideration you might as well look at a few others including the ES350 which happens to come as a hybrid.

Yes, the loan resets. I don't worry too much about that though. I think my truck days are numbered.

I am only concerned that in the short term that my monthly payments don't go up much if at all.

ES350 is similar size to a Camry FWIW. So is the MKZ
