I need some advice on whether to get 1 19" monitor or to get (2) 17" monitors and run duals....Right now I run two and it is great running with me 5800U modded to a FX2000+ Quadro card....I run cad apps and I really like it....

Also which is a quality brand...Not necessarily the absolute best but the best for a reasonable price...I heard samsung displays....Is this right???

Hey duvie,

personally i prefer having one large monitor, although i use it mainly for photoshop work (and games shhh ).

If you are not into games/ movies dont bother going for one with a low response time, since they usually tend to sacrifice a bit of contrast when compared to some 20/25ms models.

If you want a good monitor i'd buy from these brands

BenQ (high end models are divine, low end are a bit cheapish) - many of my friends have these
ViewSonic (expensive but amazing) - my current monitor
Samsung (best image quality) - never owned one, but my cousin does
Relisys - These we sell a lot at work, they are cheapish since they arent a big name - they are insanely reliable - so far only 1 dead pixel with over 2000 shipped units, and some minor issues like power supplies. Also they use samsung panels 90% of the times and have excellent clarity and colour reproduction. I owned a TL-766 i believe the code is, excellent monitor, never a hiccup

some brands i've never come into contact with are LG, Dell, Nec and sony. I've heard they are good but cant reccomend first hand

Personally I'd recommend Samsung and Dell LCD's, with BenQ also offering some very nice LCD's.

Viewsonic I have found to be overpriced and inferior to the competition; their CRT's used to be of the highest quality but in general I have found Viewsonic to be lacking in quality in the past few years.

In terms of specific monitors, the Dell 1701FP/1901FP/2001FP are great (16ms I believe); the Samsung 710T and 172X are among the best 'gaming' LCD's with 12ms response time.

I'd recommend going for dual monitors all the way, and dual LCD's is the way to go. A pair of 710T's would be excellent, or even a 710T and a higher response time LCD (for the non-gaming screen) would probably be ideal.

Right now I run dual screens with a 19" CRT (Dell trinitron) and a 19" LCD (Samsung 191T) and I use the LCD for pretty much everything, except FPS games, since the 191T is a 25ms screen, and greys look like crap in motion on it.

i dunno about their products in general but the VP201S is really an excellent product in every respect, if you look at the spec though it, the dell 2001fp, the lg 2001 something, the benq 2091 and quite a few more use the exact same panel manufactured by LG philips if i'm not mistaken, so really today its a matter of buying a TFT with a good panel manufacturer, more than just looking at the manufacturer of the monitor as a whole.

personally though i agree with jiffylube samsung are excellent lcds and their panels (and other lcd which are built using samsung panels) are always the nicest looking in terms of clarity, contrast and overall picture quality. The 191T is the same monitor my cousin has - amazing picture quality, coming to think of it i think its even better than mine... no 16ms response time though

Sony just came out with a great new 19" LCD monitor. The SDM-HS94P has a 12ms response time, so it's great for gaming, and has X-Brite Coating that helps enhance brightness and color richness (though some complain of reflectivity). I myself bought one a week and a half ago and couldn't be happier (one dead subpixel aside). No ghosting, and excellent color quality IMHO. I do notice a SLIGHT diagonal checkerboard pattern in the center of the screen which really bothered me at first, but I got used to it after 3 days. In fact, it rarely shows up (only in certain games - CoD for one) and you really have to look for it. As for the claimed reflectivity, you can only see it when it's off so what's the big deal? I'm coming from a 17" CRT anyways so it's not like I would notice it. Sony is offering a 100 dollar rebate on this monitor ATM, and circuit city had a 10% off deal on it when I bought it making it $669 + tax AR. Hope this info helps, best of luck
