1. The PC's going to be used for watching high-quality videos, encoding videos, word processing, very occasional gaming, and a hell lot of compiling.
2. My budget is around 400~500 euros
3. I live in Belgium and will be buying stuff from here
4. Intel & nVidia
5. Monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, USB hubs etc. + possibly a 1GB RAM stick
6. Yep
7. Will overclock a tiny bit
8. Within the next 2 weeks

Parts
1. PSU: ANTEC EarthWatts 2.0 500 Watt
2. GPU: POINT OF VIEW 9600GSO Geforce 9600GSO 384Mb DDR3, Clock Rate 550Mhz
3. Case: Antec 300 Versatile Case
4. Mobo: ASUS P5Q DDR2
5. CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
6. HDD: WD 320GB 16MB SATAII 7200RPM
7. RAM: CORSAIR TWINX Matched DDR2 2048 (2x1024MB) 800MHz
8. DVD-RW: SATA SAMSUNG Internal DUAL LAYER 22X +/- Writer Bulk SH-S223

Total of 570.75 Euros (471.69 without tax)

Additional Info
I'm going to be running Gentoo Linux so I need full linux compatibility with the parts. I'm aware that ATI absolutely sucks with linux so I went with nVidia. Any other information that might help the computer run smoothly on linux would help.
EDIT: I have a 24" monitor

That looks like a good system. I don't see the link as to where you're buying your parts if you are buying them online, so I have no idea how much each individual component costs and where I could recommend something similar for less money.

Also, ATI made their drivers open source earlier this year, so Linux support should improve.

I'm buying the parts from http://tones.be. It's all in Dutch though. I had to do some trial and error myself

Alright, here's what I found that should be cheaper or around the same price. Although, you really did a great job picking out parts that not only perform well, but are well-priced:

PSU:
CORSAIR VX450W or CORSAIR VX550W
Any of these power supplies will handle the system you are putting together, and the Corsair units are slightly more efficient than the Antec unit.

Mobo:
MSI P43 Neo-F
MSI P35 Neo-FI
Gigabyte EP35-DS3L
MSI P45 Neo-F
None of these boards are better than the Asus P5Q, but they are cheaper. You'll have to see how compatible all of them are in Linux, though, because I'm not sure if any of these boards have any issues. However, from what I saw the Asus P5Q is a very good deal on that website. You should get it if you have the money.

Thanks for the recommendations
I changed my graphics card to a 9600GT as it only seemed to be about 15 euros apart but had better specs.
I changed the PSU to a CORSAIR VX450W

The build is now

1. PSU: CORSAIR VX450W (VX450W)t
2. GPU: POINT OF VIEW 9600GT Geforce 9600GT 512Mb DDR3
3. Case: Antec 300 Versatile Case
4. Mobo: ASUS P5Q DDR2
5. CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
6. HDD: WD 320GB 16MB SATAII 7200RPM
7. RAM: CORSAIR TWINX Matched DDR2 2048 (2x1024MB) 800MHz
8. DVD-RW: SATA SAMSUNG Internal DUAL LAYER 22X +/- Writer Bulk SH-S223

Now all that's left is to convince my dad
last time it was like 1200 euros and he declined .. XD
