Get a small cheap HDD and use that, what are they going to say this is not what we expected well to bad for them. Also I?m concerned about them having you bring your pc into them and paying for the privilege. It is your property not there's so I wouldn?t be inclined not to even take it in. Another option would be to put a password on the windows log in screen. Then there should be no way for them to get into it (without you telling them or them breaking it). You could then use this log in to have your files hidden under another use with more privilege so they can?t be seen. If they decided that it is so much effort find the files and just format the pc bitch and moan that all your assignments and everything on that as wiped and they had no right and so on and so forth.

Just stick your hard drive in the microwave and burn it up for a few minutes. Trust me, they won't find a thing. Tell them its the Western Digital Bar-B-Q Edition.

P.S Try to keep a straight face when you tell em.

Blame it on Sony and hackers. Say Sony rootkitted your computers allowing hackers to turn it into a zombie.

So right off the bat let me tell you that I bit the bullet and just brought it right in because the computer they wanted me to bring in was my new computer which I paid for and built myself with the money I earned working in construction this summer. My parents had bought me a laptop last year before coming to school which has built up quite a bit of songs and movies which I didn't want them to see but it wasn't a problem. When I get their they make me sign a form saying if they damage my computer in anyway be it physical or software then they are not held responsible and they won't work on the computer till I sign the form and they won't turn on my internet till they work on my computer. This is a $1000+ computer I'm more than nervous to say the least.

My first advice to you would be not to make any rash decisions. Since you already submitted the computer, it may be too late for that. Still, for anyone else, or if they ask for your other computer (for whatever reason), think about the following:

What happens if you give them nothing (don't agree)? No internet forever? 1 year? 6 months? 1 month?
What would you do if your hard drive crashed today (and have nothing backed up?) Lose some music? Lose a lot of music? Lose school work?

Weigh that against what would happen if they find something "bad". Kicked out of University? No internet forever? Slap on the wrist? Keep your computer as "evidence"? Would they format your drive on their own, causing you to lose all of your data?

My advice would have been to format the drive and to hell with what you lose. Yeah, it sucks to lose your data, but it happens to people, and the world keeps spinning. Permanent records are permanent. If you have the cash, I'd say go buy a new drive and throw it in. $100 compared for a new drive is NOTHING compared to any "real" penalties the University can impart upon you. Just take a step back and compare what you will lose compared to what you could lose, and try not to be biased about it. Its just data.

Hope it turns out well for you. Let us know, I'd be interested to see what they will do.

Oh and as far as repercussion would go they would cut off my internet for the reminder of the time I lived in the dorms which would be until may of this year for me if I didn't have them look at it.

No internet untill may > RIAA on you for $30,000+

But it depends what you had on there and what the college is going to do.

John Blutarsky, who, upon learning that he had been expelled from school, slaps his head and mutters:
"Seven years of college down the drain."

Such BS they say ppl are "out" whatever that means but what it means for my computer is that while they told me 24-48 hrs to be done is going to be atleast 72hrs and can you F'in believe that they are charging me for this! You think I will get the charge to be any less because they are taking so long I'm sure the answer is no.

You were caught stealing content.

Paying them $70 and waiting 3 days is a lot better than a $3,000 - $10,000+ RIAA settlement offer.

Think of this as a learning experience. If lack of ethics compels you to steal, don't be a dumbass in doing it.

I do have valid licenses for all of the software on my PC, and I own all of the CDs on my music server.

Even back when I was a poor college student, I bought games used, then traded them for other games, no warez needed.

Netflix is only about $20/month for movie rentals, and your school might be one of the ones offering Napster for $2/month -- if not, it's only $10/month.

It's your choice whether to steal, but if you're clueless enough to be caught at it expect a certain amount of needling from people.

Finns , I'm not in college anymore , so I can't say what I would have done if I were in your shoes. Bottom line is I would have one hell of a hard time bringing my rig in to let some "TECH" look at it , and delete things without me standing over his shoulder. I think most of us have dowloaded something at one time or another.
What are they charging you $70 for? Damned wankers are probaby using it to buy DVD-R's so they can back up all your sweet porn.
Big Brother Sucks. Best bet is to get out of the Dorm as soon as possible so you can set up your high gain antenna kit. Then you can skeeze someone's unprotected wireless signal and download as much as you can using their ISP.
