You'd still be better off sinking $80 into a $300 bike-shop bike versus $200 on a box-store bike that's been assembled like shit.

What I'd do:

1) Release the cable from the derailleur.
2) Visually inspect cable, housing, and derailleur for anything that looks like an issue. Frayed or kinked cable or housing, anything gumming up the derailleur free movement, anything.
3) Manually move cable forwards and backwards through all housing to make sure it slides smoothly.
4) If it doesn't slide smoothly, replace housing sections and/or cable.
5) Dial all tension adjusters in (as if you're letting off tension), then back out a turn.
6) Reattach cable to derailleur.
7) Go here: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/rear-derailler-adjustments-derailleur to make sure your limits, b screw, and tension are adjusted correctly.
8) Those steps almost always solve my shifting issues. If they don't my next step is to check derailleur hanger alignment. You probably don't have the tools for that though.

Edit: Oh, and make sure your rear wheel is correctly in the dropouts and tightened down. Sometimes a misalignment of the wheel is all that's wrong.

Being in CO, there are no other bike shops? We have a several in my town and one of them is bike shop/school. They teach repair classes and will even rent out a stand with access to their tools so you can do repairs yourself with/without an instructor - http://broadwaybicycleschool.com/services/

There are plenty. That is the only one I can roll my bike into, I don't have a car that is able to transport a bike to a nicer or better bike shop.

edit: it is literally right down the street from me, so i can just walk there.

If you've done the above (properly...)... then I can only think of two things:
1. The indent of your shifter is messed up (it's happened to one of my STI shifters before)
2. The wheel might be misaligned. Make sure it's properly seated.

I have done everything the guides say.

Worked on it for an hour tonight, and just got drunk instead.

edit: I actually had a mental breakdown trying to fix it tonight, isn't that fuckin pathetic?

Buying a new bike next week. Fuck this.
