Need help with 21" Monitor purchase

I need some help finding the best 21? monitor I can get for under $1000.00. I was thinking of getting an Aperture Grill CRT until today when I saw one in person and was very turned off by the damper wires. Now I have to start looking at Shadow Mask CRTs. I would prefer a flat screen CRT but I can live with a slightly curved monitor. The specifications on the Hitachi CM823F look good but I can?t find any reviews of it. Anyone have this monitor or seen one in person? Any suggestion or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't even see those 2 horizontal wires anymore unless I look for them. The quality of AG is far superior than that of SM.

this might not help, but...

i purchased a Nokia 445Pro 21" CRT from Dell on the wild n' crazy deal in August last year. it is the flattest monitor i have ever seen, as flat as an lcd (but obviously deeper and more heavy lol). the refresh rates are insane, like 120Hz at 1024 i think, the dot pitch is .22. it is BEAUTIFUL for games, dvds, etc. the OSD is easy to use.

the only prob is Nokia's monitor line was bought out and discontinued by Viewsonic, tho viewsonic still has drivers/.inf for them. i bought it for ~$417 shipped.

EDIT: i also do not notice the two lines unless i purposefully look for them. this monitor's clarity alone makes me hesitate to even look for an LCD.

The monitor I looked at was a cheap 17" Sony and I could see the damper wire from across the room. If the lines are less visible on other monitors I will give Aperture Gill CRTs a second chance.

Are the lines less visible on larger monitors?

I have the hitachi 813..not as good as the 823, but this thing rocks..very high refresh rates, very clean and crisp colors, .22 dpi is really nice..makes text very readable and smooth..the first time I noticed the "wires" that sort of pissed me off because I thought I would see it everywhere, but I never notice it now. I'm really happy with mine, and would only get rid of it if I got a really good offer for it.

I've looked at a few monitors as I was thinking of getting a new one, and the 22" Nec sure looked like a good one to me. I took a look at pcworld top 10 19" monitors, and the nec 955+ was 4th on the list, and was the 1st aperture grill. I dont like the shadow masks, as they make things look just a hair fuzzy. Having seen the 22 incher in person, I can attest that this is one gorgeous monitor. I think it retails for about 650ish, but you can find it online for under 600 bucks.

A guy I know uses an Iiyama 22" at work. It's nice, and it's under $1000.

The lines really bother you that much?

Yes the lines really would bother me if they are as bad as the ones I saw on the Sony.

The NEC-Mitsubishi 2060U was the monitor I considered getting before I saw the damper wires on the Sony.

Anyone seen or have a 2060U?

Are the lines less visible on the 2060U?

I have the 2060u and until you just mentioned it, I forgot that I had those lines. They are less noticeable than the Sony.

Sorry I pointed out the lines. If you can't see them unless your looking for them I'll probley get the 2060u.

How is the text quality on the 2060u?

i have had the 2060u monitor at work since September, and it truly is a wonderful monitor. Like most other AG monitors, if you are running at a lower resolutions, it is much easier to spot the damper wires (640x480 or 800x600). However, anything about 1024x768 and you really have to start looking for them.

Text is good up to 1600x1200, and images are excellent even at 2048x1536 (but dont try reading too much at that resolution )!

You really can't go wrong with the 2060u. I think it had cost around $840 when it was purchased.

good luck and enjoy

I have a NEC Fp1355 and I am very happy with it. You can save about $150 over the 2060U and they use the same tube and the specs are about the same. I called customer service of different companies before buying my monitor and let me tell you NEC was the best by far.

You can find a link to a review of the cm823f here You can also use the "Click and Compare" button to compare it to simular models.

The text is very good depending mostly on the video card used. I run it at 1600 X 1200 and it is very sharp as are the colors. Can't wait for the new Matrox card to come out so my 2-D will really be outstanding which is more important to me than 3-D really.

Just to throw in another variable, have you thought about getting 2 or 3 good 19" monitors and running a multi-monitor setup? You could get three Sony G400's for under $1,000 and have much more screen real estate than a single 21" monitor.
