Most likely, the Windows Registry or one of the DLL/Vxd files got corrupted. Installing Windows again usually fixes this problem. RE-installing Windows will definitely fix it.

The 1st suggestion means, run Windows setup and tell it to upgrade so that you keep all your current settings, programs, and Desktop/Favorites stuff.
The 2nd suggestion means, either format the HD or delete \Program Files and \Windows Directories (move out Windows\Desktop and Windows\Favorites first), then let Win Setup make a clean Windows install.

Windows 2000 supports "upgrade" from Windows 98, but there will be a lot of useless Dlls and other files left after the install.. You'll probably lose a few hundred megs as a result. Also, you may not get the most stable results this way..

Check you \Windows\Options directory, you may actually have a copy of the installation disks there - Windows copies it there before the installation for higher efficiency. If not, I would do a clean Win2k install, but I would generally stay away from Win2K with your config - Celeron 366 is not a bad CPU (especially when overclocked), but Win2k is a resource hog. Your performance may decline by 30% or more, depending on what you do in the OS... Also, some games are not compatible, and some have really bad frame rates.

If you legally owned Win98 CD at some point but have lost it, it is legal for you to get a copy from someone else (because you'd have to call MS anyway to get a free replacement). I'd do that.

Uhh, ok

<< how exactly do i check my windows\options dir >>

Well, you could/should tripple-click on "My Computer" icon on the Desktop, navigate to the "Windows" directory (sorry, "Folder"), and then enter it and go to the "Options" directory. See if you have some files there. You should have over 60 MB worth of files in the "Options" directory. Look for the file called "setup.exe" or ("install.exe" in rare cases). That's what you'd run to install Windows.

Good luck.
