My fiance has a PIII on an Intel CC820 Desktop Board. The power supply that was in the Computer died in a blaze of smoke. I replaced it with a new one. BUt, when I tried to boot the machine, I got three short beeps. According to the Intel Technical Product Specification, this error code corresponds to "First 64KB Memory Failure". ( Intel TPS, Sec. 5.5, P. 119) I tried both sockets and a stick that I know is good. Same error code. Also, code does not change if all RAM is removed from the board.

I'm not quite sure whether the "First 64 KB" is on the stick or on the board itself. In either case, I'm trying to ascertain if I can fix it or if the board is fried. ANy thoughts would be appreciated...

Thanks...

Don't trust those "beep codes". I had a MSI 815 EPT Pro. Some cable shorted the Power supply for a moment,
and this triggered sound beeps in the mobo. I looked for the meaning of them in the manual: FRIED CPU.
But in this messageboard, oldfart prompted me to clear the CMOS, and the sound beeps dissapeared; everything was ok.
It seems that the short circuit in the PSU corrupted the CMOS, but didn´t fry anything.
(Later, I replaced the mobo because other issues).

So, I suggest you clear the CMOS if you have a jumper available for it.

Not successful. Actually, it doesn't have a jumper to clear the CMOS. Anyway, I think I'm just gonna give it up for lost and replace it with a Duron/K7S5A.

If you have no jumper to clear the CMOS, remove the battery for 30 seconds to clear the CMOS. Is that 820 board a Rambus board or one with one of thos MTH (?) hubs that tried to use SDRAM?

That MTH is fraught with problems. One of Intel's biggest errors..............Why don't you ditch that board and pick up an ASUS TUSL2-c? It'll run your SDRAM and Plll and give you some overhead if you want to switch to a Tualatin proc........

sorry I missed this thread, I was too absorbed with my memory problems.

yes, remove the battery for 30 seconds and see if the beeps dissappear.

and if the mobo is dead, yes, maybe a TUSL2-C or equivalent could be a cheap solution for you
if you want to keep your CPU and memory. But if your CPU is very old, maybe is better to
go for a P4 Celeron, or a Duron, with DDR memory, as right now is quite cheap.
