I have an older machine that we use here at my business. The machine is using a Gigabyte Board with an AMD k6, The video is an old ati rage AGP card. The processor fan was going bad so I replaced it, now the machine will not start up properly. Everytime the machine starts up I get a good POST, then the video comes up, then after about 5-8 seconds the video drops out and I get nothing. I don't hear the hard drive at all, the machine stays on, but will not respond to anything. I have reseated the memory and video card, checked all connections, tested the power supply (don't really know why, just out of ideas). I need some help desperately PLEASE.

:camera:? Also how is the gonna be shipped? Is it going to be :gift: wrapped?

Perhaps the HSF isn't working proplerly and the system overheats that fast? Or maybe the card is just old and dying? Do you have another graphics card you could try?

The HSF has been replaced already, and I tried another AGP card and a PCI card.

Hi, Did you leave the CMOS battery out several hours? It takes a good while for the Caps on the circuit to bleed down. It won't reset util that happens. Jumpers are the fastest way if you can find them. Jim

Actually yes the battery was about about 2 hours or so, and it did reset everything, when the machine booted up I did briefly display that all default CMOS settings had been applied.

maybe your probs are related to fan
most boards the cpu fan must be detected and as running to boot
perhaps the fan is too fast RPM or too much voltage for mobo
try a crappy small fan with low rpm

also dont forget to check caps around CPU for leaking

edit: also messing with HS may have moved it to not good contact with cpu and instantly overheats

Good thought, I hadn't thought of that one at all, I tried it last night before I left....no go.

Here is one that MOST don't know, and some don't believe is possible.

Okay, on the AMD processors (below AMD Athlon 64), the heatsinks (that the CPU fan attaches to) have a small ledge on it that is to coincide for a perfect, obvious fit. Well, on my AMD Athlon XP system (a couple motherboards back), I put the heatsink on, NOT lining up the ledge to the slots ledge. That causes the EXACT same thing you are talking about...and even a power down 2 seconds (or less) after I powered up.

Some say "How would the motherboard know if the ledge is on right or not?". I really have NO idea about that one, but it did. Once I put it on right, it worked like a charm. Had me baffled for a week before I finally pulled my head out of my arse.

You need to check if the heatsink is seat properly, it is possible to install it so it does not make complete contact & CPU will overheat and shut down.

Hi, Dreamer is correct. The ledge on the bottom of the heatsink will rest on the processor if not lined up properly. In that condition, there is practically no contact between the HS and the Processor package. Very little to no heat is transfered leading to overheating very quickly. Happened to me once. Jim
