Hi all!

I just got some brand new gear for my computer:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Updated to the latest BIOS F5)
RAM: Corsair 4GB XMS DDR3 (TW3X4G133C9A)
Graphics: XFX ATI Radeon HD4770
Processor: AMD Phenomen II X3 720BE

Older hardware carried over to my new system:

HDD: Samsung spinPoint 1 GB (HD501LJ)
Powersupply: Corsair CMPSU-520HX 520W

This is running in an older Antec chassi SLK3700AMB with two 120mm fans, Noctua NF-P12. The temps for the CPU is around 45-50 degrees celcius and the same goes for the chipset.

The problem i have is that the system can freeze at any given time! It is totally random and i haven't found a way to trigger this freeze. After i had put together the system and was on my way to install Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit everything went ok until after the first logon. 2-3 minutes after i had logged on the system rebooted itself and on it's way up it couldn't find the bootloader!?

So i tried re-installing Vista and after a few times i managed to stay in the system long enough to check event viewer and the only Error log i could find was this one (after every install it kept rebooting after the first logon and then it couldn't find the bootloader):

EventID 106

"Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND

TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered

through this filter until the problem is corrected."

After a number of re-installs the system at least booted all the way, after the reboot, but the random freezez made it impossible to do anything. I googled Event ID 106 and it seems that there are a lot of people experiencing the same random behaviour as i do and they also get this logged in event viewer.

And it looks to me that it is almost just AMD hardware that have this strange behaviour.

I then tried a different Samsung SATA disk with the same result. I then tried installing Windows XP Pro 32-bit and that worked ok i only had 1 or 2 freezez for the time ran it i was actually able to install drivers etc. I then tried installing Windows XP Pro 64-bit and that also went ok, i have a freeze of the system now and then but not near as how it was with Vista. The log in the event viewer for Windows XP Pro 64-bit looks like this:

Source: WMIxWDM
Event ID: 106

Description:

Machine Check Event reported is a corrected error.

I have ran MEMTEST-86 without any error, i have stressed the CPU without any problems and i checked the HDD with Samsungs HUTIL and everything passed.

The system is not OC:ed and never has been. I have updated to the latest BIOS and tried running the system with both Optimized setting and Fail-Safe

Defaults in BIOS. I don't know what to do now? Has anyone here maybe had this problem?? If so how did you solve it? Any ideas how i can test the system in any other way than i have?? It would at least be nice to narrow it down to some specific hardware so i can contact their support.

One thing that i thought of was that maybe my power supply is a bit on the weak side?

Help me Anadtech forum! You're my only hope!

Thanks in advance

Regards Christer B

The obvious is to rip everything out you can, all the hardware you dont need. Use onboard video if you have it, and can. Vista needs so much Video memory so that might not be an option, but remove hardware that you can.

Also, are you running RAID at all?

No i'm not running any form of RAID, just one disk and the only hardware that i can work with (ie remove) is the RAM since there is two sticks of it.

Unless it's failing, that PS is definately adequate and that doesn't look to be the case here.

Have you tried Delete the files in the REPOSITORY folders (..\System32\wbem) (you will have to turn off the winmanagement service to do that) 'net stop winmgmt'
?

The PS is just a few months old and was powering my old system (although not that powerhungry) with no problems so i don't think it's faulty.

Btw i think i have solved the Event 106 problem, i noticed that the front fan was behaving rather odd compared to the fan in the back. It looked like it wasn't getting enough power so i changed to a different connector on the motherboard and now it is running at the same speed as the rear fan and the WMIxWDM has been gone ever since.

But unfourtenatly i still have the system freezes, i am currently doing some testing with the RAM. I have tested this so far:

There is 4 banks that works as two channels and i placed a memory module in banks 1 and 2 ie one stick on each channel. Then you can run them in Unganged or ganged mode and i have tried both modes but the computer still freezez. I'm currently testing with both sticks in one single channel using the unganged mode but since i don't know how to create this freeze it's a wait and see....

I did try deleting the files in the repository but it didn't help me, when looking around it looks like it has helped some at least.
