Have you ever seen one of those power outlet extensions that you can turn on/off with a remote control? Plug someone's monitor into one of those, and periodically turn it off.

Seriously now, here is a REALLY good one, you'll need about 5mins.

1. take a screenshot of their desktop
2. hide all desktop icons
3. use TweakUI, policy editor and other such tools to hide My computer, docs, recycle bin and IE (and other windows special short cuts). Its different for every OS, so you'll need a bit of research beforehand so youdon't waste time (you can use policy editor in Win9x, I know that much)
4. hide the task bar
5. set the backgroud to the screenshot you took in step1.

It'll be good for a few laughs.....everything willlook identical....nothing they click on will work.

If you have any x10 stuff laying around, you could hook everyone's monitor up to one, and rondomy turn them on and off. Oh the fun you could have.....

Maybe you should just set a toaster behind somebody's pc and start burning toast in it. When the person sees the smoke rising from behind his computer, he'd probably freak out.

We used to do that to new starters at a place I used to work.

For the rest of the pranks -
I don't know what the situtation is in the LANs you got to but all the ones I go to it is an offence to mess abouts with anyone elses machine without permission. I feel totally safe leaving my machine for any amout of time. If I ever found out anyone had been messing with it, I'd give 'em a boot up the a$$. Messing about with other peoples personal property is NOT funny in the slightest.

I think this one is one of the most cruel prank you can pull in a LAN party.

You aren't directly doing anything to the computer, but you're setting up a booby trap.

Unplug his computer, hide his original power connection , find a power strip that doesn't have surge protector in them(because it will interfere with this prank) and plug your power strip into the aforementioned ext. cord's socket. Leave it around and wait for the guy to plug in his computer. phrooooom<--- lots of smoke

I wouldn't do these pranks to just anybody, BTW, only my closest friends whom I know would get the gag.....

As long as nothing is permanent, it's a good gag. Permanent sh!t is not funny(i.e. deleting windows partitions, etc.).

That's why I suggested the pranks I did.

If anyone touched anything on my computer at a Lan party there'd be hell to pay. Even if it's just video settings or something "harmless". I'll just "accidently" beat the living crap out of them and their computer.

If possible, edit someone's autoexec.bat file to add a line that warns about errors that don't exist, such as "your system is running low on random numbers."

ya, but if I rewire the adjacent outlet to 240V and you plug in the computer then goes pop!, I really didn't touch your computer

Excuse me for not reading through all the responses, hope this one wasn't already posted. Kinda long, well worth the reaction though.

Create a bunch of stupid folders on someone's desktop (ie, folders named p0rn etc, and other stuff that goes on desktops) take a screenshot of it and paste it in a paint file. Place the .bmp file in the system directory so that you're able to select as one of the wallpapers. Delete all the folders and files you created then select the .bmp you saved as his wallpaper. It will totally throw him off when we can't select all the stuff you created, but he'll be able to still access anything that was originally there. Enjoy!

Hmm, well there's the pr0n on the desktop...setting the screen saver to 1 minute and password protecting it.. I was at one LAN where me and a couple people went out to mess around and when I got back every single one of my icons on my desktop and start menu resembled male genitalia.. hmm.. people who've fallen asleep have woken up the next morning covered in sliced sausage and gummi bears with incriminating photos taken...you could change people's shortcuts. Like make Quake 3 point to defrag and CS point to Netscape or something. You could unhook someone's power button jumpers from their mobo.. that's a tough one to figure out. Change startup/shutdown screens. Every time they leave the room, turn their monitor upside down. Talk to people on their AIM lists. Find their hidden pr0n and set it to pop up at startup. Put...stuff on their mouse. Switch keyboard keys around. Take the ball out of their mouse. Go into their BIOS and disable USB.

Just a few thoughts...most from experience in either giving or recieving. I go to too many LANs.

edit: wow, read up. some people are grumpy. taking personal offense at someone changing your wallpaper is pretty absurd if ya ask me.

If anyone did that to me, I'd take a baseball bat and bash them good. Technically, it'd be that bat that hit them, not me
