Well, the old HP Laserjet IIP is finally obsolete. Anyone do tax preparation on their computers? What is a good/affordable laser printer? The software that is being used is Lacerte Tax 2001 and it no longer accepts the HP Laserjet IIP as a compatible printer.
I have looked at a couple Ricoh and HP models but I could use some suggestions. What is a popular choice among members?

I've got a Brother MFC-4800 all in one machine - I love it. It's:

600x600 laser printer
B&W scanner
FAX machine
B&W Copy Machine

If you're looking for something like that, you really can't beat the price, especially since it's a laser - I think we paid $299. PM me w/questions.

I have a Brother HL-1440 laser printer. I love this thing. It's a great quality printer at a good price. List is $299, but $50 off deals abound on this one. Do a PM on it and you can will be looking at around $200. I paid $249 and it's worth every penny to me.

Cool the Brother HL-1440 sounds good. Price wise that is... I'm gonna have to read up on that one.

I'll have to second the vote for Samsung HL-1210. I was looking at the Brother as well last summer when I was looking for a new laser, but the Samsung was a $100 cheaper and performed just as well.

I think it's selling for ~$180 on Amazon now. Check out Neoseeker.com for a list of reviews on it.

Good luck.

I'll have to triple the vote for the Samsung...I got teh Samsung laser one that has the usb and parallel and has onboard RISC chip and a simm socket to expand the memory with cheap old simms. Now I've got a fast laser with 20MB of ram for under $200 that prints everything fast and reliable.

I was actually going to run out and get the Samsung 1210. All the specs look great to me and the reviews are good too. Not the mention the price is amazing for what you're getting.

However, I cant seem to find their toner cartridges available everywhere. Where are u guys getting the toner for the laser ?

I have the Samsung ML-1210 and its been very good. The only downsides are the
small paper tray and "tiny" 8MB of memory.

Another happy Samsung ML-1210 user here. No complaints at all, great print quality, surprisingly fast. Got mine at CompUSA for 199 including a second toner cartridge. Could have got it for less online but I needed it right away.

both sound great, points to samsung for price, memory expandability, and features. Brother also seems really good for their features, and price. How hard is it to upgrade the memory? Where do I buy the memory for the Brother 1440?

Which printer is easiest to get supplies/upgraedes for?

Note, the ML-1210 does NOT have upgradable memory. 8MB should be enough for
single user use... if you get a printer with memory upgradability, regular SIMMs
should work.

Go for the Brother HL-1440, in the newest issue of PC World magazine (which means zilch I know) it was rated the highest for SOHO laser printers.

To learn more about this exceptional laser printer and where to buy memory read this thread. The best prices are at Staples, OfficeDepot or OfficeMax after coupon, PM me which website you'll be buying from and I'll provide you with a coupon. Free shipping from all 3 of those stores is included since the purchase is over $50.

I bought my mom the Samsung for Christmas and she's loved it. It was a great deal from Amazon, including a second toner cartridge at no cost!

One thing I find intriguing about the Samsung -- I've seen as Staples an identical printer to the Samsung ML-1210, with a Lexmark badge on it. (!) Now, I don't know whether Lexmark is the OEM for Samsung or if Samsung is OEM'ing for Lexmark... but if it is a Lexmark at heart, that's a sweet printer. After HP (which has always produced the best laser printers, IMHO) Lexmark is second best.

I've heard bad things about Brother's reliability in re fax machines, typewriters, etc. Never used a laser printer from them, but their reputation in other areas made me stay away.

Of course, there's also the HP low-end options -- but I don't like the LJ 1000, since I don't trust any printer that has USB only. Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I like the old Centronics spec quite a bit, okay, HP? The 1200 looks like a very nice unit, with 15 ppm and 1200 dpi... but $400.00? That's twice the Samsung or brother for maybe 20% more functionality. Of course, if I had the money, I'd just buy a LJ 4100 or even a Color LaserJet, but hey, not in the cards.

Good luck!

The Lexmark is not identical to the Samsung. The Samsung has twice as much memory and USB in addition to parallel ports. Don't know who actually makes them, though.

The Brother is 50% more expensive than the Samsung, for the same performance. I intended to buy the Brother, but I decided to look at the Samsung since it was much less expensive. The output looked the same to me, the speed seemed the same, but the Samsung was 2/3 the size and price of the Brother, plus it came with a free extra toner cartridge - leaving no question as to which one to buy.

You can find toner for the Samsung ML-1210 at the Gateway/NECX store here. It's currently priced at $55.95 and is rated for 2500 pages.
