I've searched through old threads to see if I could find help for someone else with the same problem, because this seems like a basic thing, but I couldn't find any so here goes...

I have DSL at my apt, (bellsouth), and we have a d-link wireless router but with the westell DSL we have supposedly they don't jive together so well. My roommate and my computers are in the same room though, so wireless isn't necessary. For the past couple of weeks we were just using a hub to divide the connection, until I finally could get home and get a Linksys cable/dsl 4-port router I had purchased but never used. But I can't get the thing to work, obviously I'm connected straight to the modem right now. Anyways, I go through the start-up process on the CD that came with the router but it will never work. I'm not sure what else information to give, as I don't know much about networking.

The linksys install file says this computer is set up as a DHCP server, and sets a host name and domain name, but I don't even know what DHCP is so I'm not sure if its correct. I dont know if its relevant or not but in the past I've switched between PPoE and bridged ethernet on the DSL modem, should it be on one for this thing to work (haha I'm sure thats a real noob question and I probably know the answer...).

Sorry for this incoherent post. I'm just kind of hoping someone can give me a starting point because I don't know where to begin. The computer, if it matters, is one I built a year or so ago, I'm using the on-board lan of the giga-byte 8iexp. If I can help someone help me by giving more info, let me know. Thanks, hopefully.

Thank you for your help.

I've followed the steps in the link you gave me and the steps in the file that came with the router but no luck getting it to work.

I go to the router's configuration menus, select PPPoE (there are 3 possible settings, PPPoE, obtain IP automatically, and Static IP). Then I enter in the password and user name of my DSL account, but when I go to the status tab of the config menu and click connect, it says "Failed to find a PPPoE server".

Any ideas?
