Hi, I am doing a little research into the shopping patterns of computer enthusiasts. I appreciate any answers to the following questions.

What products are you looking to purchase right now? You can be as specific as you want.

How often do you make impulse buys of over $200? How often and and for how long do you research a product before buying it?

Would you wait a week, if you could save $20 on a $200 product? If not, how much of a discount does there need to be for you to wait.

How regularly do you visit websites that keep track of hot deals such as the anandtech "Hot deals" forum or techbargains.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate any input.

1. Nothing at this moment, although an airport extreme card should be in my near future.
2. Not often anymore, $200 is a lot of money to me these days. I generally research expensive things for a couple of hours atleast.
3. It depends on how much I need it. If a machine isn't down or something, then I'll wait if I know the price will drop.
4. Once a week.

Mobo, new heatsink and fan for P4

How often do you make impulse buys of over $200? How often and and for how long do you research a product before buying it?

Rarely impulse buys of that much unless it's a highly discounted product. Research goes anywhere from a day or two to a month or two, been about a month on the mobo and heatsink.

Would you wait a week, if you could save $20 on a $200 product? If not, how much of a discount does there need to be for you to wait.

Yes I would wait, as long as it's not a MIR.

1. 1GB of Ram and a newer video card.
2. Never
3. It depends on the Item, the more expensive it is the longer the research period.
4. Yes, I waited nearly 6 months for the pricedrops to happen on the Athlon 64s before I bought one. Saved $50.
5. I visit HD every day, but with the exception of gottadeal occasionaly I don't check any others.

Yup, 20.00 bucks is 20.00 bucks. Depends on the item. Don't need it, i can wait.

1. OEM HID headlight assemblies for my car, an Inova XO3 flashlight.
2. Never. Research might take anywhere from one day to a week, or longer, depending on how badly I need the item.
3. Yes, I'd wait for $20 off $200.
4. Maybe once every other day, on average.

PNY 5700 Ultra
HP MCE Remote w/receiver

How often do you make impulse buys of over $200? How often and and for how long do you research a product before buying it?

Usually whenever its a good deal and its something I want/need/or can resell very easily/for high profit

Would you wait a week, if you could save $20 on a $200 product? If not, how much of a discount does there need to be for you to wait.

Probably not, depends how the savings was issued. If i have to go through hassle(pms/coupon/rebates) or if it is instant then maybe.

Nothing imparticular. But if a good deal comes around on a desktop, I'd jump on it.

How often do you make impulse buys of over $200? How often and and for how long do you research a product before buying it?

Never impulse buys that cost that much. If it's that amount or greater, I'll give myself at least a week to consider it.

Absolutely.

looking for a new mouse for my laptop.

impulse buys over $200? very rarely. research time? I like to read at least two reviews from different websites, plus comments on webpages. if it's something major (like a new laptop), I'll also ask some objective people for their opinions (ie: message boards like ATOT).

Would you wait a week, if you could save $20 on a $200 product? If not, how much of a discount does there need to be for you to wait.

depends on how much I needed it. if it wasn't anything important, I'd wait, but if I need it, not only would I pay an extra $20, I'd also pay an extra $50 for overnight shipping

I browse the Hot Deals forum almost daily, and I check the New Egg Daily Deals at least 2-3 times/week (mostly looking for deals on stuff that I could resell and make a profit on via e-bay)

Looking forward to a '05 upgrade to an Athlon64. 1800+ is still serving well for now.

Impulse buys? NEVER. Music, books, and DVDs make up my impulse buys, and noe are over $200 by a long shot.

Yes, only if I *knew* I would save the $20, though. On something like RAM or CPUs, where you don't really know, no.

Deals? When I decide I want something.

Nothing.

I don't make impulse buys unless it's something cheap that I can use immediately, and that's probably once a year. For a product over $200, I'd probably research for a couple of weeks, on and off. I'll ask people I know personally, check reviews on multiple sites, and search for discussions on Usenet.

I would wait.

Only when I'm getting ready to buy something.

Hope this helps your survey, welcome to anandtech.

1)What products are you looking to purchase right now? You can be as specific as you want.
a)Sennheiser HD-650 : i am starting to see more people raving it over hd-580/600 and they make it sound like the 650s are all i ever dreamed of
b)EPIA type of cpu/mobo : My main rig gets pretty hot with all those cards jammed into that tiny aria case. If I could, having a seperate, passive cooled, dedicated audio rig would come in really handy.
c)a DAP : my tiny mp3 player is ok for working out, but i am getting sick of listening to exact same songs for past 3 months; its broken and cant connect to a computer no longer I was thinking of either spotting a real good deal on a karma or waiting out till chroma comes out. If I could find a karma for <$150 used or new i would bite
d)el cheapo laptop. whenever i go home (doesnt happen too often but still) i have take some 12+hours long flight and it gets old pretty quick :| i need something to keep me entertained and books dont do it for me. something like p3-800 and higher would do, all i wanna do is watch anime or play watanabe games (i.e. melty blood) or emulators on it so...

2)Never. I always gauge how long my investment would last me and if i am really in need of the particular product in question. Needless to say, I try to visit various forums and find out what people have to say about it, and what newer stuff are scheduled to be out soon.

3)It really depends on how badly I need it and if I could start using it immediately. If it was like a DAP, maybe. A week's fun ride for $20 isnt all that bad. On the other hand, as for the EPIA, the whole point is to keep the cost down. Not like I cant live without it either, so a $20 discount for waiting a week makes sense.

4)I check ATOT hot deals every time i get a chance, like once in every few hours. recently i started visiting gottadeal.com as well, although i only go there like once a day.
