Greetings,

one of my spinpoint f1 hdds on my raid5 is dying, so it is time to replace it, my options are rather limited so it comes down to the WDC Blue or WDC Black.
beside the warranty diff, is there other diff between the black and blue? I haven't found any.
is there any reason to go with the black performance wise?

Thanks.

None of these are really meant to be RAID drives. That said, the black will be faster and more reliable typically.

it is a sw raid, not an hw raid.

I ran a compare between the two drives on newegg and found nothing different, so when you say faster, you mean that there are some features which aren't specified in the data sheet in which the black is better?

Are these 1TB drives versions of the drives?

you'll have to provide the models. Blue drives have both a 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm model. Black drives are 7200 rpm. Blue drives have 2 year warranty, black drives have 5.

You'll likely notice no difference between those models in a RAID5 config.

theyre better drives overall. it's really up to you, do you care if it lasts more than 2 years? or would you rather save $30?
I've learnt that even a 5yo drive can die after 3 years.
imho it is an issue of luck

that's not the debate, the debate is whether or not you want to RMA it, or just buy another because it's out of warranty.

that is correct, I need to think it over as if I add 20$ more to the 30$, I can get two blue ones.

thanks for the info.

Blue all the way. Paying 60% more for a better warranty on a 1tb drive is silly.
Odds are, that Blue will last until you're ready to replace your HDD raid with a ssd raid. And even if it fails, you're looking at $30 replacement, which is almost the difference in blue vs black price.

If this were $30 more for a 6TB black - I'd go with the black. For a 1tb drive retailing at $45, it's crazy to spend more for black. That WD Black is selling for what 500gb ssds go for.

I don't see any possibility in the near future of me going into ssd, raid or no raid. I just dot believe it worth it.

ESPECIALLY, since, according to pictures, the "new" WD Black 1TB 7200RPM drives, have an IDENTICAL casing/motors/etc., to the 1TB Blue drives.

Basically, they may be binning for reliability, but chances are, they are primarily just charging more than double, for an extended warranty.

WD Black drives ARE nice, and even if they are the same as the Blues, they do seem to last a while. (Have a friend with a 5-yo WD Black 500GB drive, still working.)

But I've heard stories of some WD Blue 7200RPM HDDs lasting more than 3-5 years as well. Not all of them, but enough that I might be willing to take that chance, especially if there is redundancy in the system, and the Blue drives are significantly cheaper.

Yeah, I had some of those AAKS family drives. I think that I used them for years, and then sold them off when I upgraded. I think that they still didn't have any bad sectors.
