Hi all,
I have just put together my new system and I am having some major CPU heat problems Here are the specs:
I have an Asus A7N8X Delux Rev.2 with the 1005 BIOS
AMD Athlon XP Barton 2500+ (AXDA2500DKV4D AQXDA 0320MPMW)
Thermaltake Volacano 7+
2x512MB PC3200 Infineon DDR
ATi Radeon 9500@9700
120GB Maxtor 8MB cache HDD
My problem is that the CPU temperature in the BIOS is a LOT higher than what Asus Probe shows, by up to 20 degrees celsius!! When I first booted the PC it gave me a setting of 11x100. The temps in the BIOS were 30 for the mb and 55 for the CPU. I then set it up to use the standard 11x166 but he temp instantly went sky high to 65 and up... and the AsusC.O.P. kicked in before windows loaded. It would then turn the PC off in a matter of seconds!
I checked the heatsink and although it was on solidly I took it off again just to be sure. I put the thermal paste on again, a thin layer, and carefully attached the heatsink back on. It is on very securly, no movement between the heatsink and CPU. I have attached dozens of heatsinks before and I know what I'm doing.
But still the same results... the BISO CPU temp is way higher than the Probe's. I installed Windows at the 1100MHz setting, and am currently using it. All my games work and the CPU doesn't go over 50 on full load. It's at 35-40 while I'm in Windows and doing nothing. The motherboard temp is 28-30, both in Probe and in the BIOS. When I change the speed of the Volcano's fan it affects the temp just as expected, at the highest fan speed it's about 5-7 degees cooler than at the lowest.
Does anyne know what's going on here? I have flashed my BIOS to versions 1003 and 1005 with no change. Whenever I set the CPU speed to the default 11x166 it just shuts down. The CPU temps go over 70... instantly! From 55-60 at 1100MHz, to 70+ at 1833MHz in a matter of seconds!!! Surely this is a faulty CPU?
Please any advise will be very appreciated.
