Need USB help..........

I have a Visioneer 4400 scanner. WIN98 SE. Microstar 815 Pro m-board. The computer is not recognizing the scanner whatsoever. Nothing. It is plugged in properly in the USB port. All of the USB items in control panel/system say the USB is set properly. I downloaded an Intel USBready program. It checks the USB. It says everything is fine even the drivers. The add hardware wizard does not install it. I followed the instructions and the software installed fine. Any thoughts........

Double check to make sure that USB is enabled in the BIOS, it may be turned off by default. Even if USB is off in the BIOS, programs that troubleshoot the system will still tell you that USB is fine and dandy. I had a similar problem with the IR port on my ThinkPad, by default it was disabled in BIOS, but it showed up as active in Windows. Once I enabled it in BIOS, everything worked perfectly. Hope everything is as simple as that for you.

If possible try the whole scanner system including connecting cables in a functioning usb setup. That test will ring out all of the components. If you can't do that then go the hard way, verify that USB actually does work on your sys by successfully using another USB device. Look for faulty cabling, even if new, also read your manual very carefully end to end. You might even have someone else go thru the operation from the beginning by themselves. I don't know your level of expertise on such matters but even the pros mess up on occassion. ronach

Check to make sure that the USB port is actually connected to the mobo. I've heard of some systems that have 4 usb ports in the box, but only two are hooked up. Needed extra pci h/w for the other 2.

have you booted up with the scanner connected?

do you have "imaging" installed? it's part of windows. you need a program called "stimon.exe" running to even use the scanner.

as for the software, uninstall it for now.
