I just tried to flash my ASUS P5B Bios to the latest version (0806 I believe) using the Asus Update Tool in WinXP... All went well and I was prompted to reboot.

After reboot I got a "Bad BIOS Checksum" error.
It automatically started BIOS recovery and found P5B.ROM on my original Asus CD.
It installed, all went well and I rebooted again.

-> same "Bad BIOS Checksum" error again, same procedure, original P5B.ROM restored for the second time.
After rebooting a third time, now it doesnt do anything anymore. No POST, no bad BIOS checksum, nothing except my case fan start spinning at max speed.

HELP!! Did I kill my motherboard???

no but your bios chip might be gone...

you'll either need a new one or do a hotswap from another p5b board...

but before you do all that... try clearing the cmos and pulling the battery from your mobo for at least 5 minutes... then try to startup again

Hmm.. did what you said but nothing, still no POST.

In case the bios chip is dead, can I replace it myself? Or should I get a new board? I've only bought it last week so I don't want to spend another 120$ because of a failed bios update!

You know that disclaimer that comes up before you flash your bios, "Don't flash your bios or upgrade it unless you know it will fix a problem you are having."

That one always makes me nervous when I update the bios.

That being said I have done it dozens of times with no problem. I am always afraid of what just happened to you.

Good Luck

Call Asus, they'll send you a new one, for not much money. And yeah, they're easy to replace.

Send the board back to the vender you purchased it from. They'll give you a new board right away. You don't have to mention the bad flash. Just tell them it won't post. Let them send it back to Asus.

Before you take it back pull the battery out and leave it out over night. Then in the morning put it back in and try to boot up. If it wont come back then get a new mobo.

Seriously? That's an awefully expensive motherboard not to have a replaceable BIOS chip.

I'm serious. Doesn't bother me though. I don't know for sure if even the 680i boards have this "feature".

I suppose it's just something not built into the p965 boards.

I had the same thing happen to me last week with my P5B-E.
Flashed the bios and then no post. Tried resetting CMOS. No good.

But what did work was pulling the ram. I then put one stick in the slot
farthest from the CPU. The board then posted.
I then changed the memory voltage in bios from Auto to 2.0 volts.
Re-installed the ram and all has been well.
My G.Skill memory is rated for 1.8-2.0 volts.

that is one crazy solution....

It worked though. I found the tip searching the ASUS forums
for my motherboard. I'm sure they have gotten quite a few RMAs due to this.
I thought I would be sending the board back, too.
A week later and I've stressed and benchmarked the board and am
getting ready for my first attempt at OCing.
