All FEAR is is jump out scares. Just without the annoying, aggravating "spawn enemies behind you" nonsense that DOOM 3 so completely overused.

However, eventually you learn that for 99% of the game, the only thing(s) that can actually hurt you are dudes with machine guns. The "paranormal" stuff is all just for show and effect. And I just can't find random dudes in "special forces" gear to be frightening.
AvP 2 scared the piss out of me.
Amnesia... I couldnt play it for more than 20 minutes fuck that way too scary
Horror doesn't always mean scary.
Was going to write something similar to this. From all the games I've played (and I've played a lot, in consoles and PC), Fatal Frame is easily, by far, the scariest I've ever played. Maybe it can be played with an emulator like PCSX2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLd0KLUne4kReally wish they'd port Fatal Frame onto PC. That game would work beautifully.
Agreed about Metro being more the hardcore game. Girlfriend definitely isn't a big gamer, so something that is easier to get into and play would be more ideal. I do intend to use a PS3 controller with the PC connected to a big TV, so a fast paced shooter probably isn't the best choice either. It's interesting to see that Metro 2033 has been recommended after all. I was going to recommend it when I fist saw this thread yesterday, but then decided against it. I think aspects of it can be accurately described as 'horror', but it's not the kind of horror I'd associate with Halloween. Most of the fear I got out of it stemmed from flesh and blood monsters, not supernatural things. The most valuable role of the horror in Metro 2033 is to heighten immersion. The best example would be in the Caves map, when you get separated from your party.
One thing about Metro 2033: it's not a walk in the park (at least the original wasn't, I don't know if they've dumbed down the redux). It's kind of taxing on the player, and can feel clunky and claustrophobic with the gas mask and slow reloads etc. It's not a good casual game to blunder through hastily, because if you don't manage your inventory carefully, you could get stuck at a hard part without ammo or something, and that's when the game turns into a tedious grind.
