For Halloween night, me and the girlfriend want a scary game. Something along the lines of a Silent Hill style would be great. She is borderline arachnaphobic, so no spiders please (which rules out Penumbra unfortunately). I will be using my laptop, so the game has to play nice on a Radeon 5470. Thanks for suggestions.

Outlast looks fun though the system reqs seem a little steep for a Radeon 5470 to handle. For several reasons, the desktop is staying at home, hence the low spec. For reference of it's performance, It can handle Source engine games at decently high settings + 720P. Demanding games like BF3 won't even run low settings unless the res goes to 800 x 480.

Basically, it can handle games that aren't butt ugly so long as it's not really pushing advanced effects.

Will have to take a look at FEAR. I've heared sparce references to the series, but am completely unfamiliar with the plot. Any opinion on the Amnesia series. From what I've seen, it seems reminisce of Eternal Darkness with the sanity system. Any spiders in there?

FEAR is one of my favorite games in all of life.

I would not consider it "horror." It's more about psychic experimentation with some violent results.

The story, at least in the original, is very interesting - well above average for an FPS. They totally screwed up the story in the second game, but it's still worth playing, IMO.

the first FEAR is imho the best horror ever made for PC.

I've heard this from other people, too, and it always surprises me because I didn't find FEAR scary in the slightest. Mind if I ask what your age is? (just wondering if we hit different games at different ages)

For me, I'd have to vote for System Shock 2 as all time scariest for me. Some of the mutants dragging pipes on the floor and opening doors behind you.. damn that was scary. Newer games though that would run on your system, I'm honestly not sure, haven't played good horror in awhile. Will be interesting to see what else comes out of this thread.

Horror doesn't always mean scary.

I was just being colloquial (that said, FEAR was a game that attempted to be scary). If you'd prefer, I will tell you that it evoked no negative emotions from me.. except perhaps boredom.. which I suppose may be negative.. sooo waaaaaiiittt.

So she wants a scary game, and she's scared of spiders, so wouldn't logic dictate that you play a game with spiders in it?

FEAR is a great game. One of the better FPS games of the last decade, with a great spooky atmosphere.

It is not, however, scary. The sum of its scares consist of "I'm climbing down the ladder and....AHHH! ALMA IS BEHIND ME!....and then disappears".

It worked the first few times, but after awhile it wore thin. A great "creepy/spooky" atmosphere, but the "scare factor"was nonexistent.

I'd say Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Resident Evil on STEAM.

hey, maybe you are not into jump scares and creepy corner-of-the-eye apparitions but FEAR scared me shitless.
i thought amnesia was far less scary. i wasmore worried about dying and having to restart from the save.. but FEAR just terrified me.

The Librarians in Metro 2033 still give me shivers. Probably not the horror you're looking for though.

I'll probably pick up Metro later for myself on for the desktop (read the book myself), but there's no way it will perform well on the laptop I'm bringing.

Kinda off topic, but Fahrenheit 451 (the book) turned into a game would be pretty great, for any devs that go on these forums.

So the choice seems to be between FEAR and Amnesia huh? Both great games, only got it in me for one playthrough for the night though. Do either games work decently with a joystick controller?

You guys WANT to be scared (based on this request) and your girlfriend is afraid of spiders, so you pull spiders off the table? If you really wanted to be scared, shouldn't you go with the stuff that actually scares you?

Interesting. I actually even enjoyed Doom 3 for the jump out scares. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood when I played FEAR? I don't remember much about it, perhaps I should go back and give it another shot.

All FEAR is is jump out scares. Just without the annoying, aggravating "spawn enemies behind you" nonsense that DOOM 3 so completely overused.

However, eventually you learn that for 99% of the game, the only thing(s) that can actually hurt you are dudes with machine guns. The "paranormal" stuff is all just for show and effect. And I just can't find random dudes in "special forces" gear to be frightening.

That's kinda what I recall. It really felt like CS (with tactical dudes everywhere) and then occasionally things moving/lights blinking/etc. randomly with a cut scene thrown in every so often. I think I just enjoyed Doom3 more because it had better atmosphere (despite the scares all being cheap scares).

I never said this request makes sense. She's adamant about no spiders, so if I don't want my laptop thrown against a wall, no spiders it is.

Thanks to the dude that suggested Metro 2033, it's looking like I'll be hauling my desktop over after all. She's very much interested in things like Supernatural, and Metro 2033 seems a close fit. Plus she wants demonic creatures to kill, so that kinda rules out Amnesia.

So, should I get the redux version, or go for the original?

I enjoyed soma a lot. It should run at reduced settings on your hardware. It's largely spiderless, but there is one section near the end where there's a cave filled with particularly nasty looking spiderlike things. It's a very short segment that she could leave the room for though.

There are few if any jump scares in soma, the feeling of "there's something implacable and awful stalking me and I'm never exactly sure where it is" is unmatched by anything but maybe alien isolation though.

Huh, Metro 2033 is scary? In what way?
FEAR is slightly better, but it gets old fast (the scare factor I mean) when the novelty wears out, but, it still is a good game.

AvP does a nice job in some areas, but, it is more of the same, you can't see the enemy, until you are in its face, or, it pops out of the darkness.

Having no spiders is no fun! Get a few plastic ones, and then go play whatever game, and when the time is right, lower a spider that was tied by some fishing line at her. I am sure she will get scared proper!

Sure, you might have to sleep on the couch after that, but... then, you just wait for her to get into bed, where you had a live tarantula there, and when she screams, you can run in and "save" her. Then you will be rewarded for your act of bravery.
See, you win at the end!

If for some odd reason you don't want to go for a sure thing, then, well, wuss out and play your metro 2033 (though, I still don't know why that game would be considered scary).
