Hey i wanted to know if any of you guys who are using a Q9450 or any Penryn cpu are going to upgrade to Nehalem when it comes out? Are some of you waiting for more benches to decide or are you waiting till 2009 for updated steppings?

DDR3 is going to have to sell for $20 a gig before I'll switch to corei7.

I hear ya o1die and bharatwaja.

I have a pretty outdated rig that I'm holding off on upgrading until Q1 next year, and part of me really wants to go with Core i7. But, the other, more sensible part does not want to pay $200 - $300 dollars for a Core i7 MB just for the privilege of getting shafted on the price of DDR3 RAM.

Core i7's biggest challenger for quite some time will be the great value that PC enthusiasts can already get from the existing Intel product line.

No plans to upgrade to i7 until Q2 of 09 at the earliest. My Q6600 and QX6850 are still running great.

DDR3 isn't much more expensive. Technology moves on or else we'd still be using 72 pin EDO RAM.

DDR3 1333:
3 x 1GB = $110

3 x 2GB = $220

DDR2 1066:
3 x 1GB = $44 + $23 = $67

3 x 2GB = $57 + $114 = $171

The difference is less than $50 and you will have lower voltage, faster speeds, and triple-channel bandwith.

cheapest nehalem CPU - 300$
Cheap X58 board - 250$
cheap DDR3 (3x2GB) - 250$

I'll stick to an overclocked Q6600 for now.

And those are not the cheapest, but quality G.Skill

Where's the other 2GB? Did you even bother reading my post? DDR3 1333 3 x 2GB is $220. You need to compare 3 x 2GB sticks of DDR2 1066 or higher.

Edit: The prices for DDR2 will be even more expensive since I found out there is DDR2-1200.

you just get two units of those and have 4 modules of 2GB... buying anything else makes no sense...
Also there is no point in buying those high speed DDR2 modules, they are solely for major overclocking. Not for a typical board. Yes the DDR3 1333 is slightly faster, but in real world testing this is insignificant improvement to speed. Overall a Q9550 with 2x2GB should be same speed or faster then the cheapest nehalem with 3x2GB of DDR3... Honestly the Q6600 still seems like the best deal due to price alone.

2x2x2GB DDR2-800 = 100$ shipped... and it is 8GB of ram instead of 6GB of the 3x2GB @ 227$ (no free shipping on that one).

Yes it WILL go down... but it has not YET.

Definitely not. Too expensive to begin with for me and I promised myself I wouldn't spend so much on comp parts after being an early adopter when Core2 first came out as well as when the 8800GTS came out. I'm gonna stick with AMD for at least another year since I only got this system 2 months ago.

What if we start with 4x2gb of DDR2-1066? Then you need to compare 4x2GB of DDR3 1333.

Oh snap.

You aren't comparing apples to apples. DDR3 is faster, thus it should cost more.

Well DDR2 will be around for quite a while, well after DDR3 going mainstreem with i7. Besides you are still using DDR with a P4 system and "waiting for Nehalem", no pun.
So for us whom already have a system to our liking, there isn't any need for us to just plunge into something that will be very expensive and won't give us any real alarming benifets just yet. As for you, it will, but you still have to pay the premium price.

I think it will be a long time before I run into anything my E8400 will not be able to handle.

Based on what I've seen, Hyperthreading actualling makes Nehalem run worse with Multithreading, and usually
runs slower in games than Penryn in general....the Q9550 actually outperforms the 960 (the 3.2GHZ Extreme Edition).

So I'm planning a new rig, but I'm wondering if I should just wait. Obviously most would say no,
but we haven't seen a lot of real-world testing of final consumer parts.

So what do you guys think? Worth the wait, or bite the bullet and get the
best I can get now?

What a load of sillyness.

I never said you guys needed to upgrade. I just don't like when people try to bash Core i7 just to console themselves into thinking they still have the best rig. Core i7 will demolish Core 2 in every aspect. The whole it won't due anything in gaming is a myth. It was already proven false at IDF when they were comparing performance in Lost Planet: Colonies.

At what price? A GTX 280 destroys an HD 4830 but that's meaningless when the former costs that much more.

Your use of the word 'demolish' is also wrong, unless you have your own set of connotations for the definition.

Those people that have a quad-core clocked at >4Ghz won't lose a thing to i7.
