I'm keeping my Q9450 for a least a year or more until Sandybridge. There's no point upgrading all the time unless you're running some rendering farm or doing video editing work that requires fastest speed possible.

As for gaming, you're better off buying GPU if your CPU is pretty good already.

Your use of the word 'demolish' is also wrong, unless you have your own set of connotations for the definition.

Those people that have a quad-core clocked at >4Ghz won't lose a thing to i7.

(not responding to you, but quoting you to add further words in the same line of thinking)

From my perspective the healthy majority of forum hype preceeding Nehalem launch is very reminiscent of the forum hype that preceeded Skulltrail launch.

Complete with all the performance/cost concerns (and rebuttals) and needing to buy new ram, etc. Even the number of threads (8) that you need software to take advantage comes out. And don't forget the gaming arguments, it's better, no it won't be, yes it will be, its all for epeen, it'll demolish yorkfield, yadda yadda yadda.

And where did skulltrail end up?

Regardless my point is this, hype is hype and there are people who like to be on one side or the other and until we have the numbers in front of us there is no value to arguing and debating the hype.

Once we have the numbers then at least a fruitful conversation can be had about the relevance of the performance for a given user's interest in cost, performance, apps, etc.

All the arguing about skulltrail evaporated once the numbers were out, and not because skulltrail dissapointed but because there was no longer an argument.

I'm thinking about waiting for the benches and what other people who buy it say then decide. I know last time i asked about switching from p35 to p45 and almost all of you said dont do it. Well i didnt listen and after i got the the p45 i really didn't notice any improvements. If it (i7core) looks like a winner maybe ill ebay my p35 cpu and mobo and my p45 cpu and mobo. One thing is for sure this upgrading every 6 to 12 months is getting to be a pain in my wallet

Sucking so badly that even AT refused to use it after a while?

DDR3 is definitely going to hinder Nehalem adoption, perhaps for a while. Not only does DDR3 carry a price premium right now, but 1.5v DDR3 carries a particularly heavy price premium since we can't use much of the current enthusiast-class DDR3 that requires higher voltages.

DDR3 will come down in price, but it sure won't be any time soon. It's been on the market for nearly a year and a half now and still costs an arm and a leg compared to DDR2. And for what? A speed benefit that's nearly non-existent on current Core2 platforms? Ultimately it's the right way going forward, but the timing couldn't be any worse. You can pay $30+/GB of DDR3, or $13/GB for DDR2.

Waiting for benchmarks, but also waiting for value priced i7 derivatives to come out as well. I have a philosophy that prevents me from spending more than $200 on any given component in my system.
