The fan bearing is about to go out on my X800 XT Mac edition card. I am sure ATI will not sell parts, so what cooler do you recommend for this card...

can I safely change it wihout destroying 500 dollars worth of equipment? It looks like the heat sink and fan attach with only about 3 or 4 screws through the board. Two of them appear to be through a stabilizing bar of some sort.

thanks

Is this your card?

In regards to it being safe. Have you ever put a HSF on a CPU or a water block? It is very similar and if you know what you are doing you should have no problem.

Here is a vga cooler that will do an excellent job and should work with your gpu if you look at the compatibility. Do you have AGP or PCI Express also?

Mine is the AGP card in a Mac G5.

I have not done any modification work, but did have to solder one of the capacator cans back onto the card because it popped off when the card was removed from the slot. Accomplished that with no problem.

I like the looks of the zalman cooler ... appears to take much less room on top of the card..
So it looks like all I have to do is clean off the old "goop" add some new goop and screw the cooler back on, right?

Thanks for the information.

Technically yes, you want to have the cleanest surface though. Cleaning alcohol does the job very well. I think the cleaning alcohol to use would be 90%. (I havent used it in a while). Clean the GPU with q-tips and alcohol. Do this by dipping the qtips in the alcohol then rubbing off the goo softly. Afterwords when you have it clean, rub it down with something that is 100% cotton with some more cleaning alcohol. If you dont use 100% cotton, your item could scratch the hsf and/or gpu and it can effect temperature. I use artic Silver 5 as the "goop"

Another vote for the zalman. Have one still running strong on an x800xtpe. My brother has it now. Very low temps with only whisper noise.

Have an ac s1 on my x1900gt. No noise and great temps-cheap also. Not sure if it will fit the x800 series though.

edit: Use google to find out how to install those things. Always somebody who posts pictures on how to take the old HF off.
