Now that you have disabled the warning that your machine is vulnerable to attack, I suggest you address the real problem!
The Messenger SPAM is a red flag telling you that you don't have a firewall, which is your real problem. You should address that deficiency ASAP.

It's better than nothing, though it offers no protection on programs "phoning home" from your computer.

Why is it that everyone HAS to have a firewall? Secure your PC, that is the ultimate goal to protection. A router or firewall makes you no more secure than a wide open PC if you dont know what to do with it.

"everyone" doesn't have to have a firewall. For instance, you don't need one, I can plainly see. The reason others may prefer a firewall is that it's a lot easier to handle securing the machine when there's a single point of control. Not everyone is a security expert, and they don't understand the risks, a firewall makes it easier to manage those risks. Just because you don't think you need a firewall, that doesn't mean they're not right for anyone. I didn't see the election where you were voted Net God.

Bow down before me my network minions.
my point was that people should educate themselves a bit...I am not saying they need to go out and buy a Layer-7 Alteon switch and learn every aspect of it, but at least look around a bit and see what the issues are out there when you connect tot he "net:.

And..in case you were wondering...it was a closed election...the infidels were allowed to vote for whomever they wanted....as long as it was for me.

And wouldn't the Alteon switch be providing firewall like capabilities under a different name? I agree that not everyone needs a software firewall, I personally don't have one. I rely on the hardware protection of my router's NAT and firewall features. Virus protection and spyware/malware scanning round out the mix. However, if you're not going to remain vigilant about what's happening in your environment, a software firewall is an easy way to maintain decent protection. One size truly doesn't fit all...

I'm still a big proponent of firewalls.

One look at blaster, nachi, nimda worms will make it pretty clear.

True...but if everyone had patched their systems two months prior when Microsoft announced the problem, it would not have been an issue.
