"everyone" doesn't have to have a firewall. For instance, you don't need one, I can plainly see. The reason others may prefer a firewall is that it's a lot easier to handle securing the machine when there's a single point of control. Not everyone is a security expert, and they don't understand the risks, a firewall makes it easier to manage those risks. my point was that people should educate themselves a bit...I am not saying they need to go out and buy a Layer-7 Alteon switch and learn every aspect of it, but at least look around a bit and see what the issues are out there when you connect tot he "net:.
