I think that most consumers (this does not include any of us) still don't know that 360 has streaming Netflix...let alone know what streaming Netflix is...

I agree. Correct me if I'm wrong though but doesn't the Xbox 360 box advertise Netflix? But yeah, other than looking at the box, I don't think consumers would know.

Anything they can do to make streaming more popular and expand the selection of available movies is great IMO. As long as they don't start doing console exclusives...

I'm more concerned with increasing the popularity of streaming before bandwidth caps become permanent.

Does this mean Netflix will be re-adding the movies that Sony had removed in a hissy fit when the 360 got exclusive Netflix streaming?

my guess is that sony will keep the exclusive.

so it seems ps3 is becoming the best value.

I hope this has HD streaming. Even more reason to love my PS3. Now, if only I had time to play games...

Now I'm VERY interested in who wins this holiday season

I can't wait to see the implementation. I am planning on getting a Slim early next year and phasing my Xboxes out.

MS is in trouble IMO. Even assuming that they finally have the hardware issues ironed out (a big assumption), they really have nothing to compete with the PS3 at this point. The quickest way to add more value would be to either eliminate the XBL Gold charge or add some serious value adds for that subscription, something I am not sure will happen.

Most likely its a function of the source rather than the PS3. Some sources have great looking near HD streaming.....like Lost or Heroes. Other stuff is a bit inferior. Of course, your connection matters alot. Unfortunately the PS3s and 360 still use G protocol bridges rather than N for wireless. Better yet if its hard wired. I watch alot of streaming on my PS3 and LG 390 BR/streaming player (the LG has an N device). Very cool to be able to cue up something on Netflix and watch it instantly. No doubt we'll all be paying for this at some point.

If the PS3 has HD streaming and it functions as well as the 360, I will definitely start using my PS3 for Netflix since I have a non-HDMI 360.

PlayStation 3 owners will be initially required to have a free, Netflix-provided Blu-ray disc in the console to watch said movies, taking advantage of Blu-ray's BD-Live tech

Well that's retarded.

Most if not all of those movies were added back to the Netflix streaming library.

The thing I'm seeing punted around online is that this is going to require a disc of some sort - possibly purchased - due to the exclusivity agreement with Microsoft being about _integrated_ into the console. That makes some amount of sense.

The disc is free according to Netflix's website.

I don't know about that contract loophole theory... obviously it's just speculation since none of us can read the contract, but I think Microsoft would probably sue if that was the case.

From Joystiq:

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii." Additionally, Pachter believes Netflix streaming will expand to Nintendo's console next year. "We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months."

I think it is far more likely that MS had a one year exclusivity deal. It was launched on the 360 in Nov of '08. It is coming to the PS3 in Nov of '09. Kind of obvious IMHO.

Netflix on the 360 requires a code to synch up the 360 to your Netflix account. The Blu-Ray disk may just be the PS3 version of this mechanism while Sony gets a downloadable version ready.

Indeed!

I'll just keep watching on my 360. Will be interesting to see if MS decides to make Netflix available to Silver membership now though. Really, they probably should have all along, but hey, their Xbox division is making gobs of money, so what do I know.

This doesn't seem to make much sense though. Why not just distribute the code on the disc online through PSN? Seems like a lot of extra hassle to print physical discs.

No moreso than Netflix competed with MS' movie downloads. Besides which, the movie industry operates in windows so new releases will hit PSN first and then Netflix Watch Instantly much later.

This.

From reading the PR on the PlayStation blog, it appears that they are using the BD-Live technology to get Netflix streaming, hence the BR disc. This might be a temporary thing until they can get it integrated, or it might be to circumvent the XBOX exclusivity. Time will tell, but it is awesome, regardless.

Now I literally have no reason to renew my XBOX Live Gold subscription.

Well, it's something other than an end-round the exclusivity agreement because Sony said they'll be adding a firmware update or application later. So, they apparently still have to figure out how to get the BD-Live tech on the Blu-ray disk ready to run on the PS3 without a Blu-ray disk in the drive.
