If they're using BD-Live to do Netflix streaming, this disc will work on all BR-D players that implement profile 2.0. That's pretty cool. It would also explain why Sony isn't offering it for download: Microsoft would still retain console exclusivity.

Personally, I think using a disc for this would be something of a PITA compared to using the dashboard. But "free" has its own appeal, to be sure.

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members.

I think that is a pretty big hint that there will be some sort of downloadable version down the road.

My Roku for $99 takes care of Netflix, I don't see the point unless the PS3 won't require an additional monthly fee like the 360 does? You have to have Xbox Live Gold in order to use the 360 with Netflix which ends making the Roku a better deal even yet since you just pay for the Netflix service $8.99/month stream all you want.

No extra cost on the PS3.

Nexflix isn't really a reason to subscribe to Live, it just added value to Live.

Maybe a reason to pick up a PS3 slim now, well that and MLB The Show. Wish I never sold my PS3 now oh well, I already have a Roku so it looks like another Netflix for a spare TV if it's needed.

Does this mean Netflix will be re-adding the movies that Sony had removed in a hissy fit when the 360 got exclusive Netflix streaming?

my guess is that sony will keep the exclusive.

so it seems ps3 is becoming the best value.

My guess is this is the concession made to get streaming on the PS3.

I also reason that I will be getting our family a Netflix subscription for Christmas since we can watch movies both upstairs (PS3) and downstairs (360) off of one subscription.

The disc is free according to Netflix's website.

I don't know about that contract loophole theory... obviously it's just speculation since none of us can read the contract, but I think Microsoft would probably sue if that was the case.

I'd imagine Microsoft's Silverlight licensing is going to get more expensive for Netflix as well.

I don't think it's going to be an issue, the Roku doesn't use Silverlight so I think this is only a PC issue since it uses a browser. Not sure about the 360?

360 uses Silverlight for pretty much everything video related.

Over at Ars, they have the following:

As pointed out by Zatz Not Funny, this was probably to get the solution to market as soon as humanly possible, but may also have been chosen in order to avoid making Sony too much as a middleman. Either way, having to an insert a disc means one extra step that will take this feature from "welcome" to "slightly irksome."

This may not be the case forever, though. The two companies predicated the news by saying that this would only be the case "initially," indicating that the PS3 might still get native Netflix streaming sometime in the future. Indeed, this appears to be the case after we spoke with Netflix spokesperson Chris Garrity.

"Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system. The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them so this," Garrity told Ars. "Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network."

From Joystiq:

Is releasing the PS3 application on a disc required by an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft?

The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360. Our goal is to give members the opportunity to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix via the widest variety of Netflix ready devices. All of our partners are aware of our goal.

PR speak for "yes".

I wonder if this from Queasy's post:

means MS has one more year of "exclusivity?"

If the disc is a way around MS's exclusivity, I imagine MS is probably pissed... You guys may all hate switching discs, but it still takes away one advantage the Xbox had.

It does....with several of the newer ones. I own this one and love it:

Netflix, CinemaNow, Youtube, VUDU. Very nice interface. Will pick up where you left off later if you stop the streaming. Also works as a media streamer for your PC. Price has dropped to $290 which is excellent for what it does. Uses an internal "N" wireless bridge.

Interesting. As of last night, I hadn't received such an email yet, but that would be cool if it arrived in time for the weekend!
