Network Backups

We have a small (13 computers) LAN based on peer to peer with a hodgepodge of win9x machines. We have all the files based on two main drives that we backup onto an iomega dittomax tape drive.

We're outgrowing our ditto (7-10 gig capacity) and I was wondering if anyone knows of good alternatives. I've looked at the Onstream 30gig system - it looks nice. Any other thoughts?

For the most part HP Surestor (4 mm) dat drives are very good. They do come as autoloaders so you can gang up tapes for an evening. I would suggest a Quantum DLT 4000 if you have the $$$ (around 1300) as they are fast and hold mucho data (20-40gb).

Ahh - I was wondering what the autoloader function meant - my mind hadn't linked the obvious mechanical device to the word.

Onstream is simple and affordable. Not to mention fast.

I've got a Onstream 50GB SCSI setup to backup 4 of my network machines..works great...took them forever to come out with Windows 2000 drivers, but their Onstream Echo software works good on 98 and W2k, and with their new drivers for NT4 and 2000 server, it supports most of the popular Server backup software like Arcserve and Backup Exec...

Thanks Super - I'm thinking either the internal 30 gig or the scsi 50. I'm a little leary of the scsi interface, I've been able to avoid having to deal with it so far thanks to speedy IDE and low network requirements.

screw all that crap get a 240 gb snapserver and use raid on that ho no need for backing up
