Networking questions, need help!

I have planning to build another system and use it to act as a server. On the network there will also be two client systems. On the systems will be W2k installed. I would like to how it would be possible for me to use a client system and control the actions of the server system. Such as make the server system run programs without me physically being there, as I don't want to hook up a monitor and keyboard to the server. Some of the programs for example would be defragging, scandisk, irc, etc. BTW, I have a cable modem and will be using a router for this network.

Well, if you wanna run XP on the server, I believe it has built in remote control stuff. Otherwise you'll have to install a 3rd party program to do it.

One idea would be to run a terminal emulation program like VNC and RADADMIN. If you would like info on these programs let me know.


Pretty much what these programs do is.

When installed they allow you to logon to the pc remotely and control all aspects of the computer like if you were there in front of it.

You can use the built in Terminal services (free for 2 concurrent connection for Admin TSCAL), VNC (free), Remote Administrator (inexpensive, very nice tool, 4 concurrent connections), or PcAnyWhere (Very nice interface, but not as secure as Remote Administrator).

If you decide to go the windows route.... I recommend and use windows 2000 server, it comes with terminal services. And you can add on microsoft's firewall service to win2k server/adv server, ISA 2k, which I also recommend and use.

If you must go the Win2K route, I would opt for 2K server and use Terminal Services like the others have said. I have no experience with this myself, but I believe with Win2K Pro, you can defrag and scandisk remotely through Computer Management so that may be an option if you don't want to go with Server on your machine.

If you have to choose between VNC and terminal server; I'd recomend TS. Note that there are brute force password crackers for VNC [don't know if they work against current versions] and the new XP 'remote sharing' is basically hacked up Terminal Server with a few graphics + bells and whistles. Cool thing about Terminal Server is you can load the client on a single 1.44MB floppy, and carry it around with you to plug in and get to any of your machines in a pinch. Very helpful.
