hi there, kinda new to networking...
i heard somewhere that you can network 2 or more computers using usb. although i don't mind the 12mbp speed bandwidth usb offers, i like its ease.

anyway, i can't seem to find any product that supports or mentions usb networking or any usb network adapters anywhere or any thats on sale.
please help and tell me where i can purchase one!
i have 3 computers right now, and i will share my cable connection using windows xp built in ics
so one computer will act as a server, and the other 2 are just regular computers.

Pure USB you can connect only two computer using this device.

Link:

USB Direct Connect .

For more then two you need a Combo USB Ethernet.

You buy USB to Ethernet Adapter for each computer, and you Plug the Ethernet side of each one of them via CAT5 cable to Hub or Switch.

What you save: You don?t have to open the computers.

What you loose: Money, and speed, and being Cool(j/k).

Link:

USB TO FAST ENET ADAPTER-1 TYPE B PORT 10/100 RJ45 PORT STD USB CAB..

BTW: I am not sure that ICS support hybrid networks.

If it does not, this product claims support.

Sygate® Home Network

Isn't there a cheaper way to connect just two? Why can't you just get an A to A USB cable and connect them? I keep seeing a 6 foot limit, so if you stayed within that would it work? Or would you ned additional software?

You can connect the two computers with a Chain and two locks.

You can tie a rope between the two computers.

All of these methods, including USB cable from one USB port to the other, will physically connect two (or more) computers.

However, they will not create a Network.

Because none of them, including the pure USB, is an Ethernet device.

And what is more important, connecting two computers via regular USB cable will probably damage the motherboards of the two computers.

Thanks jhu. That link is what I was looking at right before I posted. They say they are the supplier of Windows-Windows direct connections for Microsoft and they supply Internet Connection Sharing software with their cables. Since their USB cable costs $70, it's not as cheap as it sounds. I then looked up USB cables and found that you can get A to A ones for about $7, but they recommend active ones instead. I guess I need to learn nore about USB. These must be meant for extension to hubs only since the one at www.lpt.com says it contains switching circuitry.

Maybe I should regroup and just look for a cheap USB ethernet adaptor for a laptop since the desktop already has a NIC, so the cost should just be ~$30 that I saw a Siemens one for at Best Buy plus some CAT5 cable.
