NEW 64bit-Semprons (S754)

Just got a 2800+ with x86-64 for my brother. I'm also using an ASUS K8N NF3 motherboard. So far, I've overclocked the CPU to 2GHz with RAM at 200MHz (DDR400), effectively making the system perform identical to a Sempron 3400+. This also makes it perform as fast as a S939 3000+ or S754 3000+. Not bad for the money.

Now, I'm pretty sure that this mobo has some headroom left... I think I'll try for 300MHz bus in the coming days. Might put an 80mm fan close to that passively cooled chipset though. Also, I can't increase the CPU core voltage, so that might put an end to this overclocking adventure before hitting the mobo's limit. Can say that I expect this to happen, though.

I have the 2500 also, but the Soltek board doesn't like anything above 290fsb. Right now I'm at 2.04ghz.

The 2500+ is incredibly cheap at $50, but I'd want to have 350HTT on my board before I'd go for one. I don't know any boards that can do that consistently. The multiplier of 7 on the 2500+ makes that chip good for about 2.2ghz, which is still pretty damn good if you're on a budget.

What happened to your two Epox boards? I've had pretty good results with mine, so just curious. Also, thanks for the heads-up on ZZF pricing. Newegg has it for $58 plus $2 FedEx Saver.

I may have just had some bad luck. They both would do 300+ HTT...so overclocking wasn't the problem. I had one AGP slot just die. The other one stopped recognizing my IDE drives. The undervolting issue was also really annoying sometimes. I know a lot of people have had great success with this board, but from my experience I prefer the Chaintech. It's also a bit cheaper.

For $4 more you can get the 2600+ if you don't mind half the cache for an 8X multiplier. For $17 more you can have both. Whichever, any will make a great value.

Well, now I own an Epox and a Chaintech. Unfortunately the CPU I was supposed to get for the Chaintech is MIA (been 2½ weeks and my supposed "friend" still hasn't shipped). I did test the board briefly and it works. Doesn't seem as easy as the Epox to get tighter memory timings and have yet to see how high HTT it can go (the Sempron was locked and was known not to OC high). Sexier looking than the Epox, I think it gains +1 to speed and +3 to mojo from the black PCB alone!!! That Epox gets a -1 to mojo from the drab green PCB. Now if I trade out the Epox for the Chaintech and swap the A64 with +4 cache over the Sempron...

How high would one actually be able to OC the E6 Sempron 2800+ with the standard cooler and 2-3 modules of cheap 400 MHz 512 Mb memory?

With most enthusiast boards using Nforce3 or Nforce4 chipsets from Abit, Chaintech, Epox, DFI... I'd say 2.4GHz is standard issue. Some lucky boards/chips may hit over 2.6GHz.

Don't expect to do anything with three cheap 512MB modules because the socket 754 memory controller architecture cannot handle three double sided DIMMs. Then again, 3 DIMMs won't work on socket 939 either.
