New 850 Evo 500 GB

So I upgraded my system drive to an 850 Evo 500 GB. I originally used Aoemi backupper to clone from the Seagate SSD, but it forgot to make the Samsung a GPT disk, and since Windows 7 was installed on a GPT drive with UEFI mode, well, no boot :/

So then I tried the Samsung software and it worked fine. New Drive is now GPT. An added bonus is I can use windows update again, as it was corrupted for some reason on the previous install.

The magician software seems nice, but I have one question, is it worth enabling RAPID for faster speeds? I have 16 GB of RAM in my system, DDR3 1600 Quad channel. Rest of rig in sig.

Why only 4.1Ghz and liquid on top of that. Maybe fans are spinning low except for gaming and what not. gl

What firmware is on your EVO ?

You should enable and test for yourself. In my experience, it does make a difference as a read cache, the write part is harder to observe.

The OP has 850 EVO, there is no indication so far that V-NAND TLC suffers from the same problem.

Thanks for the info, worth a shot I guess. And yes, it is the 850 not the 840, it has the latest firmware, as there is no update yet.

If you turn on CRAPID mode, you are not benchmarking your SSD anymore, you are benchmarking your RAM.

Translate that intro real world performance and it means absolutely nothing.

For example, test this.....

Copy a huge 10GB + video file or whatever large file you want from your C: partition to another partition on another disk......

you will notice that the Windows file copy progress finishes insanely fast.....the moment it finishes the copy, I want you to restart your system

then check that file you copied, it would be corrupt, reason is, yes the file copy progress finished fast, but it didn't finish really, all it was doing is copying the file from your RAM cache (RAPID) onto the real disk.

so it's just cheating + placebo effect

And after you read this, you will never enable RAPID again.....it will actually make your performance worse not better

RAPID is just a caching solution like others on the market. For some it works well, for others is useless. Some should never enable it, since it requires systems with plenty of free resources (both CPU time & RAM). Unstable systems also run the risk of loosing data left in the write buffer.

I did not base my statements on some benchmarks, I encouraged OP to activate it and check for himself... it's easy to see if the systems feels more responsive overall or not, and disabling only requires a reboot. As for the TechReport review you linked, maybe you should check the 850 Pro update. If it shows improvements in a test that uses reads of 1.1TB and writes of 525GB, it must be doing something right.

Bottom line is the same though: if you don't like it, don't use it.

RAPID caused a some occasional BSOD's on my x79 system. I finally turned it off. I wanted more consistent performance anyway.

I tried Rapid and did notice better app response but for some odd reason caused problems with the IE 11 browser so turned it off again.

I will probably try it again after a patch or two see if that bug was worked out.
