Hmmm... I broke out the trusty tape measure and at least in the Sonata III there is 11" of clearance from the back of the PCI covers to the HDD cage. If it is the same length as the 9800GX2 then it should fit with .5" of clearance.

I love the monolithic box cases. Lian-Li cases, The Silverstone TJ-03 and TJ-10, Antec P182

Mega +1's

Original P180 owner, couldn't pass up a Microcenter deal on a new P182 Gunmetal. I love these cases!

Yes, my old 8800 GTX would fit even with upper drive cage installed (no wires or HD sticking out though)

Also, I did check the size before I bought it. The EVGA website and product PDF says it is 9" long!

PCIe connectors are fine, in fact they're much easier to get to than on the 8800GT.

Wow, that's a typo. A big one. Sorry you have to go through this because of a stupid typo.
So you have 3 options:

Return the card without restocking fee (direct them to typo)
Get a bigger case
Make it fit.. (if possible)

So is this card 10.5" like the 8800GTX or is it longer?

It is exactly 10.5" PCB. I just measured it.

That's to the cage itself. Now put a hard drive in it. Sticks out probably an inch or more? Just guessing. I don't have the case.

The HDD are nested inside the cage so I should be kosher. They got these "clip type thingys" they screw into then you slide them into the cage. Thanks for the info Keys.

Case: Antec Sonata Solo (http://www.antec.com/us/produc...ails.php?ProdID=18500). Its a standard mid-tower ATX, same size as Sonata I, II, & III, plus every other mid-tower case I've ever seen.

The worst part is that even if I cut out the HDD bay or got a bigger case, it appears the fat-@ss cooler wouldn't fit between the motherboard's memory slots and SATA connectors! Motherboard is an Intel DX38BT (http://www.intel.com/products/...oard/DX38BT/index.htm). Again, standard ATX board with a fairly common chipset and layout.

WTF?!

Thats a sickner mate, what are you going to do ?

Take it back or upgrade your case and mobo?

Upgrade my Solo case and relatively new X38 mobo for this card? From the reviews, its pretty much a G92 8800GTS. I'll just exchange it for one of those for less. No problem.

I like the case (Antec Solo). Its as quiet as a normal Sonata, but with 2 fans, cable guides, grommeted sliding drive bays, etc. If the 9800GTX was a revolutionary card, I'd consider it, but an 8800GTS 512 is apparently just as fast for less money.

I think you should be creative and get a pair of 8800GS's or 9600GT's. They'd probably dust the 9800GTX anyway.

guess what....time for a case upgrade . FYI i have a p182 and that couldn't fit if I had the upper HD cage occupied.

That's a huge card. I'm installing the MSI you're removing and I thought THAT was large.

I would mod the case!

And tell your wife that unless she wants to pick out and purchase a new case to live with it

Unless she's got some super good reason for her choice, which she very well may.

It took me weeks to find a case my wife would allow in the house... now I have to either get rid of her or find a new case she likes.

Yea I got rid of mine (wife) for the same reasons...

make sure you get one of the new "dual-core" models (identical twins)... twice the fun

I have the Solo as well, and I just put in the same factory OC'ed EVGA 8800GTS 512. Actually, I bought the Solo a year ago, and never put anything in it. At the time, I was considering getting the 8800GTX when it first came out. But when I read about the length of the card, I went and measured the case. Results? It was very close. The problem was that the manufacturers were giving different specs for their cards. In the end, someone found out that the 8800GTX needed slightly extra room than what the drive cages were offering. Given that the 9800GTX is as long, if not longer (since one would need to worry about the orientation of the power plug now as well) than the 8800GX, it would not fit into the Solo without some major fixups.

Anyways, sorry you had to find this out after you got it. Cheers on the 8800GTS 512!

No frills case FTW!
I will pay MORE money to have a case with none of that junk.. Heck I cut the wires on most status LEDs cause they illuminate the entire bedroom at night otherwise.

A comp is meant to do work without being heard, seen, or noticed. Not flash and bling and draw attention to itself all over the place.
