new agp card

so im still limping along with my old computer trying to make it till the end of the year. it only has an agp slot, which i currently have a nvidia 6800 in. I was wondering if there are any decent agp upgrades out there to bridge my gap until i buy a new computer. i looked at frys online, and found: XFX 7600GS 512MB AGP Video Card. i think it was like 129$, which is right around what id like to spend (if not less). how would this 7600 compare to my old 6800? would i even notice a difference? are there any other cards out there that people recommend?

Forget this choice.

Go with ATI HD 3850 from Newegg which is $115.00 AR and it is the fastest AGP card one can get:

The HD 3850 is an excellent chipset with a relatively low power consumption so a new PSU may not be required....

im running windows xp, will i have any problem with drivers? (thought i read something about that).

no you shouldnt have any problems with it working on xp, but id seriously consider saving it towards a total upgrade

I agree with adlep, the ATI HD 3850 is a fantastic AGP card! I'm running a Nvidia 7300 GT on my old rig and have plans of getting the 3850 later this year. Btw, I don't think you will have driver issues on XP though.

The 7600GS is quite slow - avoid.

If you want a trouble free upgrade with good driver support , get a 7600GT. Very low power cards, but slightly faster than a 6800GT. Should be able to get one for dirt cheap and your PSU will be fine. A newer option is the 2900XT, again low power usage, should be faster than the 7600GT, but driver support is poor.

If you want performance, with quite good drivers, get a 1950pro (but your PSU might be a problem). They are going cheap now the 3850's are out.

If you want the ultimate performance, it's the 3850, although some people are having various issues (I had to up the AGP voltage from 1.5 to 1.6 to get it stable) and the drivers are poor at the moment. It does run cool and uses about the same power as the 1950pro, if not a little less.

With a 3850 I can play Stalker with max details, COD4 and Oblivion at max details. All with a single core A64. Not bad, since I do most gaming on the PS3 this card has been a nice stay of execution for my aging PC!

i have an AGP x1950 pro XGE edition if you're interested. PM me if you are. not sure if that's faster than what you got but it adequately runs 1920x1200 on older games.
