  1. Overview of the problem
Just recently bought a 4890 and it won't post any video in my main Pci-e slot.

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
I just recently bought an Asus top 4890 for my old desktop. I had to buy a new PSU as well because my old one didn't have enough power.(Corsair 850tx) I was unable to put the Video card in my top pci-e slot because of the sata connections were in the way, or at least I thought(I was able to get the card to fit in there latter). So I put my card in the bottom PCI-e slot and booted her up and everything went pretty smoothly. I got a couple games going and noticed I was getting poor fps for such a top of the line card. Thats when I remembered reading a while back about the second PCI-e slot on my card runs only at 2x and not the traditional 16x. I had future mark do a diagnostic and sure enough i got poor scoring and it said the card was only working at 2x. Great, So I figured I would just buy a pci card with sata ports on it and then move my video card up to that top PCI-e slot so everything would work great. Well I unplugged the sata wires and moved the card up to the top port but when I powered on the system I didn't get any video at all. I could hear my system post but I didn't get any video. On my card there is also three flashing red lights. In the order from outside in [#] [ ] [#] [#] . The card still works in that bottom pci-e slot, just not in the top 16x. The old 16x worked before with my old card which was a 7800gt.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
    Above^

  4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
Consistent video doesn't work at all and those lights are always flashing.

  5. I already tried these steps:
I already mentioned trying the card in that different port and it working. Plus I pulled out those sata wires to make sure the card was seated firmly in the top PCI-e slot and still no success.

  6. My software:
    • Windows 7 RC (7100 build)
    • AVG antivirus
    • Firewall: None

  7. My hardware
    • System brand & model, if it?s a pre-built system such as a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. If it?s not, fill in as much of the information below as you can.
    • DFI NF4 Ultra-D
    • Amd 3800X2 ( and it isn't overclocked right now)
    • Asus Top 4890 (EAH4890/HTDI/1G (DDR5))
    • Corsair TwinX 2x 1 gig
    • Corsair 850tx Brand New

  8. Other information that might be relevant
Thanks for the help, not feeling to great about not being able to get all the performance out of this card...

You remembered to plug the two PCIe power cables back in, yes?

(sorry, I know it seems obvious, but I've forgotten to do it a few times myself)

Sounds like it could be one of the PCIexpress 2.0 incompatibilities I've experience helping others before. Try updating your BIOS on your motherboard?

And there hasn't been an bios update for my mobo since 2006 pci-e 2 isn't even that old. I don't think so at least..

PCI-e 2.0 came out in 2007. You might want/need a new motherboard. Which do you have atm?

I'm headed over to a friends house shortly just to check and make sure the card works on a PCI-e 2.0 slot. How do you switch the ports to run at 8x I'm guessing somewhere in bios?

Like I said, PCI express 2.0 incompatibility. It SHOULD work...but I have seen many have trouble depending on which exact motherboard and which vendors graphics card.

Get a new mobo that is PCI express 2.0 compliant.

Did you make sure that your BIOS has that update? Also have you looked up what that light code means? I would hope it would be listed in the manual which came with your video card, or on Asus' product page for that card there should be a list of the codes somewhere/online manual with that in it.

The Asus Manual is worthless it doesn't have anything, and I've been searching online for anything on the lights. Most I could get was something to do with a short... But I doubt it because i have all my screws in on my mobo and plus that old 7800 gt worked in that slot. I haven't got around to updating the bios, but I guess it wouldn't hurt.

I think though, if I flash my bios and I still can't get this thing to work instead of building a new computer I will just pay the restocking fee and see if I can get my money back from Newegg. Because I forgot about dx11 coming out in a couple months and it might pay to wait till those cards coming out. How does that sound?

(1)- Your rig, while decent for most things, is old as dirt for gaming. I assume, given that you bought a 4890, that you're into gaming. This can only mean : upgrade that old beast! Prices are cheap.

(2)- When DX11 hits, you won't be seeing DX11 games raining from the sky suddenly, it will take time. Also, the first DX11 cards will likely be $$$, and probably not a giant leap in performance by any stretch.

My advice : build a system based around either Intel or AMD, your choice, with a budget processor, but a decent amount of ram on a decent mobo. For Intel, the E5000/E7000 series are cheap, and great overclockers. Running into the 3ghz+ range is ridiculously easy on stock volts, and that will be more than enough for most games. For AMD, I have less experience (just moved to a PhII-X4-810 myself), but the X3 series Phenom II seems to be a great value and overclocks well (3ghz seems very common with little hassle). Some even unlock the 4th core, but again, I have no direct experience to relate on that note.

In any case, a budget CPU, on a good mainboard, add in 4GB of quality DDR2, and you're set. 4GB of nice DDR2 should be $50 or so, and you'll be able to upgrade to 8GB cheap if you want. With a good mobo, you'll also be able to upgrade up to whatever the future holds for AM3, or with Intel, the highest 9000 series Core2Quads, which should hold their own for a good while yet (overclocked to 3.5Ghz or more, I'd assume they should still be capable of decent gaming performance, provided the video card is up to par, for 2-3 years).

See those make no sense though... Because this card has worked in a 16x slot in another computer and this card has worked with the same psu connectors in the bottom slot of my mobo. So Those can't be the right errors. It has to do with all three of them being on.
