Hello All,

Well my new system arrived from googlegear/newegg this week. My components include:

ASUS A8N7X Deluxe Mobo
AMD 2100+ (T'Bred B)
SLK-800 HS
Albatron Gf4 Video
WDD 100GB 8MB HDD
Lite-On 52x CDRW
512 MB Kingston 2700 DDR
ChiefTec Case

Everything installed perfectly...that is until I powered the machine up. The mobo powers up, the HDDs spin, and the case fans come alive. However, the computer never boots! It powers on for 3-5 seconds and then shuts itself off! I've checked all of the connections, reset the BIOS via the battery, but no luck. I even swapped in my buddies AMD 1800+ with no luck. Swapped in different DDR sticks, and even a diff vid card. I've never had a machine power up for 3-5 secs and then power down. I verified that the CPU fan was plugged into the jumper labeled CPU_FAN but no change.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is my new ASUS Mobo destined for RMA? There's nothing worse then having a great setup sitting around unusable!

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forums. The problem might be that the heatsink isn't mounted correctly on the processor. Also, what thermal interface material is there between the HS and CPU? This board will power down if it detects that the CPU temperature is to high. Hope you can work this out. If you don't get many replies here, ask in the motherboard forum also. Peace.

Thanks for the reply!

I used the thermal grease that was included with the SLK-800. I applied it as directed by the Thermalright website and mounted that big ol' heat sink onto the proc. I am nearly positive that it was mounted correctly. The comp only stays powered up for 3-5 seconds. Is that enough time for it to get too hot and power down? Should I just get a normal HSF combo and try that?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A few seconds is all that the CPU core needs to get really hot. Though if you are sure you did it correctly, then perhaps the board is dead. Good luck. Peace.
