New Asus P55 requires new memory?

I'm going to be picking up an Asus P7P55D soon and I see alot of "Perfect match for Core i5 & Core i7" and "Dual Channel Intel Core i5 & Core i7 CPU for P55 motherboard" in the DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) listings on newegg. Are these "new" memory kits needed to run my core i7 860 or is it just clever advertising?

Can I get this G.Skill 4GB Kit that doesn't explicitly state that it's compatible with the new i7's and be ok?

The G.Skill will be fine. The only thing that really matters is that it runs <= 1.65V.

I see. Would you mind explaining why it has to be <= 1.65?

Because Intel specs their on-die memory controller for RAM <=1.65v.

They're the same specs, and they're $5 cheaper. (Actually, according to NewEgg the voltage is 1.5V compared to the ones you posted at 1.5-1.6V. So if that's correct they're also marginally 'better'.)

GSkills Ripjaws DDR3-1333 CL7-7-7-21 1.5V or DDR3-1600 CL7-7-7-24 1.65 (actually runs at 1.60V) are great kits at the moment.

Make sure to set X.M.P. Profile in the BIOS. I first manually set it at rated specs per CPU-Z at 7-7-7-24 @ 1.60V. X.M.P. detected same latency at only 1.54v, when they were rated at 1.65v. The kit also runs at 1.50V at 7-7-7-24 DDR3-1333. Rock solid and stable.

In this review, they even managed 6-6-6-18 timings at 1600 at 1.65V.
