I guess it is about that time again. I was at the ATI website, and there is a flashing banner about a new product upcoming. It is very similar to the tactic ATI used before they rolled out the X800 series. It took me forever to find an X800 XT, and now it looks like the madness is about to begin again. Oh well, I guess that is what keeps me interested.

Must be the X850 series. It's been posted about here already. Google will get you some info.

Allegedly, these will be far more available than the X800XT/PE was. Take that for what it's worth.

Ugh....I read that it will be PCI-E only. Guess that means I will eventually be getting a new motherboard as well. I reckon that this past generation of graphics cards marks the beginning of the end for AGP. Doesn't seem so long ago that I bought my first mobo with AGP technology, finally leaving the PCI port for graphics behind me. It is ironic to me that we return to PCI with PCI-Express now. Life is funny.

There is no relation between PCI and PCIe, they are very different technologies.

Grr . . . newbs using PCI-X as the abbreviation for PCIe really makes me mad. A while back someone asked about getting a PCI-X graphics card, I was confused until I realized he didn't know the proper abbreviation. They I just got ticked off that he continued to use the PCI-X abbreviation even after being corrected by several members of these forums.

On a sidenote, if you own that system in your signature, you won't have to look at upgrading anything for a good year, maybe longer.

Yeah, but I am one of those idiots that has to be on the bleeding edge, although the next day after I order my stuff, something better is out.

I'll give you 50 bucks for that 3.4Ghz P4 for you to apply towards your AFX-55.

I think the industry is more stupid by actually having something like this which is easily confusable.

It seems alright to me that people would want to shorten PCI-Express to something like PCI-X. Perhaps PCI-e should have been called PCI2 or Fast PCI

The new ATI cards isn't just a clock speed bump.

It's gonna be like 9700 Pro - 9800 Pro type of upgrade.

Actually, I believe regular "PCI" is actually PCI 2.2 these days. So going down the numbering road wouldn't help much.

The goofy thing was how they named PCI-X, *then* came up with "PCI Express". If you don't know what PCI-X is (and most people don't), but you do know of the existence of something called "PCI Express", you would naturally think that PCI-X is the abbreviation for PCI Express if you saw it written somewhere. Either they should have picked a better name in the first place for PCI-X, or come up with something else for PCI Express that wouldn't get confused as easily. Of course, this is what you get with design by committee -- bland names that all blend together.

Interestingly, SCSI followed your second suggestion; there's SCSI, Fast SCSI, Fast Wide SCSI, Ultra Fast Wide SCSI, etc. Most of them are referred to by their rated speeds nowadays, though (ie, SCSI-40, SCSI-80, SCSI-160, SCSI-320, etc.)

Ah, nm. Misread that. Yes, probably ~10% faster would not be a bad estimate.
