So after six years I guess its time for a new desktop. I've done a bit a research, I think I have a decent set picked out. I don't really game much, mostly older games when I do, CS:S Battlefield 2. I'm really looking for something that can do well encoding video. I'm looking to put my rather large DVD collection on my server. Ideally I'd like to be around 550ish, but could stretch. I'm buying in the US, Newegg/Amazon or Microcenter. I have no really preference of parts.

My main questions are will the power supply be OK running this and if I forgot anything or am not getting quality parts.

The total for this is right at 550 after combos/rebates.

Antec Three Hundred
LITE-ON Black SATA DVD-ROM

Looks good, though you might want to consider the 870 since HT does help when doing video encodes. A 760 is no slouch though and will certainly blow away a 6 year old machine!

There is another sub-forum under Consumer Electronix for Audio/video and Home Theater.

I have always wondered if it is easier to do hardware encoding using a HDTV Tuner Card or software.

Will 380 watts be enough? Earthwatts is a good line of product from Antec don't get me wrong but there doesn't seem a lot of wiggle room with only 380W.

380 would be OK if you never game or stress the CPU, but I would recommend a 500w PSU or greater just because the price difference is so low. I picked up an OCZ 500w PSU from Micro Center for $50 about a year ago and it's tip top. (despite what some people say about OCZ)

This Seasonic has a good reputation - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094

380W is plenty for a system with a low-end GPU. The 1156 CPU's TDP is only 95W, and no other component draws more than a few 10's of watts. Don't believe AMD's "minimum requirement." They give an inflated number as a CYA measure.

Bought everything but the processor from newegg.

The 870 is $60 more than the 760. Will it provide a noticeable upgrade, or will it be just a benchmark thing? Is it worth that price?

PSU is okay but doesn't come with a power cord. I'm not making that up; read the review of it and the spec sheet.

mfenn addressed this in your very first reply. The HT is likely to make a noticeable difference in encoding speed. Clockspeed/overclocking/gaming performance are not hugely different. Still depends on you how to view the extra $60 spend.

Right on.

The 870 is about 25% faster in H.264 Pass 2.
