As recommended by the sticky, a profile of use and resources follows.

1. For Web, light games, maybe some programming.
2. Budget is flexible.
3. Purchases in USA
4. Buying from both Microcenter (local) and Newegg.
5. Looking at i5-6500 65W from Microcenter, G. Skill DDR4 (8GBx2) F4-2400C15D-16GVR @ Newegg
6. Power supply may be a CORSAIR 750TX 750W ATX12V recovered from an older system or a repurposed Thermaltake but less wattage (430W).
7. No overclock
8. Current monitor is an odd sized Samsung SyncMaster 2343 slightly more than 1080.
9. Need to build before July 29. I have Windows 7 Pro I want to upgrade to Windows 10 with a dual boot for linux.
10. Windows upgrade only SW issue
11. Considering mini itx build. (Here's the rub as this limits cpu & cooler option.)
12. I have an unboxed Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
13. Also, I have both DVD and BLUE RAY optical players which I may use only for software installation.
14. Greatest unknown is motherboard.
Note: I am not married to the mini itx choice as I may repurpose an older large CoolerMaster case currently in use with a core 2 duo.

I'm having trouble getting a firm idea of what you want from this.
2. Budget is flexible.
All paper money is flexible. How much of it do you want to spend? Can you at least give a ballpark to aim at?

Can you define "light games" for us? Can you give specific examples?

11. Considering mini itx build. (Here's the rub as this limits cpu & cooler option.)
How small would you like this build to be? The build you've described so far could be as small as 6.1x6.1x3.2 inches, if you don't want a discrete graphics card.

Thanks, Ken, for the reply.

And thanks for the link to Techspot. I find the Asrock Deskmini very interesting. I don't like the big ATX cases I still use in my house.

Cost isn't really an issue, but I do wish to build something that will fill my performance and case size preferences.

But first I would like to ask you a few questions.

Would I be losing something by not going with a mini-itx? I see that the Deskmini uses SO-DIMM DDR4 memory. Would I prefer a mini-itx to the DeskMini and where would I find the DeskMini for purchase?

Is there likely a soon to be update to the current DeskMini 110 or even a plethroa of 5x5 products from other mobo suppliers?

Also, what would be your opinion about waiting for Intel's upcoming Kaby Lake processors for my diminutive build?

I used to build and support personal computers but haven't built a desktop for years. My last build was with an i3-2100 sandy bridge when it first was released. So much is new since then.

Yes. A PCIe slot. So you couldn't add a discrete graphics card. That's why I wanted to know what games you play.

Good question. It doesn't seem to be out yet.

Kaby Lake will have better onboard graphics. That's about its only benefit.

I placed the order @ newegg. They had no reviews but I find the item just what I wish was available ten+ years ago. I just returned from MicroCenter where I picked up an i5-6500. The ram is SO-DIMM, also from NE.
Thanks for the help. If anyone is interested I can report on the build.

a 430w thermaltake if i recall correctly is a garbage PSU, would not trust it to do anything at all.

you should be able to find ddr4-3000 ram for a very slight bump in price.
